Fruit Sundae Recipe

DeeDee
I am always looking for ways to cut calories but still enjoy sweets. I am realistic enough to know that I can't go without so I try to come up with creative substitutes to get full, get nutrients, go easy on calories, and still get my chocolate or other sweet. A great snack for the evening when you want a little something to satisfy your sweet tooth is to make a fruit sundae. It's like an ice cream sundae with a hearty bowl of fruit instead.

Start off with whatever types of fruit you enjoy and are in season in your area. Just last night I took a hand full of sweet strawberries and cut them into halves and then added fresh pineapple chunks and an entire banana. All were ripe and sweet. The fruit made me feel like I was having a nutritious snack but I still had a hankering for the not-so-good-for-you. Enter the whip cream and small portion of chocolate sauce. I put enough on to enjoy it, but not enough to feel guilty. Even with these toppings, it's still better than if I had made an ice cream sundae.

There are plenty of other things you can do with this to make variations if you don't like what I've suggested. Consider raspberries, Mandarin oranges, grapes, blackberries, or blueberries as part of your fruit. And for toppings? Raspberry sauce (Friendless has the best!), peanut butter sauce, butterscotch for sauces and then add your favorite goodies such as shredded coconut, nuts, chocolate chips, sprinkles, maraschino cherries or anything else you put on a sundae. Cool whip works great too if you do not like whipped cream (how could you not?) and it comes in a variety of flavors to change things up.They have chocolate and french vanilla, in addition to the original.

There are plenty other ways you can spruce this dessert up a bit. For example, take already made puddings in the dairy aisle and add them to you bowl, then put in the fruit, and whatever toppings you please or use Jello. More of a cake person? Add small pieces of shortcake or brownies, without the pudding or Jello and remember to keep it small since you are trying to save on calories and lose a little weight.

You'll still be ahead of the game with fruit as the heart of your dessert rather than ice cream! Enjoy!
