Fruit Trees for Fathers Day: A Unique an Unexpected Gift for Fathers Day

Fathers Day is quickly approaching, how do you buy a gift for the man who has everything. Should I get him a new gadget, or a gift card, would he rather get clothes or music? Which tool did I buy him last year? Tired of giving him the same old stuff every year? Does your dad now own 10 bottles of the same aftershave? You don't need to repeat last year, get him an original and unexpected gift.

Do you remember the story "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein? It was such a touching story. If you have read it you know that it is more than a tree, it is a symbol of the sacrifices and love he has given you over the years. It is a testament to his dedication and patience. It is also a "green" gift that he can enjoy. It's always good to plant a tree, and with a fruit tree he can also reap the benefits of the freshest fruit around. With the satisfaction of knowing that he grew it himself.

An average size fruit tree in New England will run between $16.00 - $40.00. Some trees are self pollinating, meaning you only need one to produce fruit. Other trees need a mate to produce fruit, be sure to ask your local nursery center for details when you are shopping for trees. When purchasing a tree for someone else please note the full grown size of the tree, depending on the landscape it may be better to buy a dwarf version of the tree. If a fruit tree would be too large for the yard, there are also fruit bearing bushes like blueberry, or raspberry. The raspberry bushes are available in thorned and thorn less varieties.

The type of tree or bush you select should be regional. For example an orange tree will not thrive in New England. Exotic plants are ok in the house but they tend to die if planted outside in a different climate than their native region. Your local nursery usually will have a wide variety of regional fruit bearing plants available at a reasonable cost. The fruit trees will not usually produce fruit the first year because of the shock of being moved, but give it some time and some care and you will have fruit before you know it.

A fruit tree will be an unexpected gift that he can enjoy year after year. Not only is it useful, providing shade, and food, it will also be a reminder of you and how you have grown because of his love and nurturing. Don't buy him another bad tie, or a coffee cup, try a more unique gift that he is sure to love.
