One of the most needed vitamins for the human body is vitamin C. Vitamin C helps extremely with keeping humans healthy, strong and can even help with looking younger. However, consuming to much vitamin C can be very harmful to the body. The recommended daily intake of vitamin C is 90 milligrams, however it is considered to be safe to consume up to 2000 milligrams (2 grams) of vitamin C per day.
There are many fruits that have a very high amount of vitamin C in them and of course the most famous and popular of them is the citrus family. Oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines, mandarins and grapefruits all have a lot of vitamin C in them. They can be found almost in any grocery store and do not really cost as much as other fruits that are high in vitamin C. Orange has about 50 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. Lemon has about 40 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. While lime, tangerine, mandarin and grapefruit all have about 30 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. As you can see orange has a lot more vitamin C than other citruses.
There are some fruits that have a higher content of vitamin C than citruses have. However, those fruits cost more than citruses and are some what unique and expensive alternatives to the citruses. For example, fruits like guava, kiwi, papaya and strawberry. Guava has about 100 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. Kiwi has about 90 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. While papaya and strawberry both have about 60 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. As you can see all those fruits have a higher content of vitamin C than even an orange has. Especially so with guava, which has a double amount of vitamin C than an orange has. So even though those fruits cost more, you also get a lot more vitamin C.
There are also some fruits that have less amount of vitamin C than citruses have. However, those fruits are still considered to be great sources of vitamin C and can be good alternatives to citruses. For example, fruits like mango, blackberry and honeydew melon. Mango has about 28 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. While blackberry and honeydew melon both have about 20 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. Mango, blackberry and honeydew melon are still high in vitamin C. However, compared to citruses they contain a lot less vitamin C. Especially when they are compared to a fruit like guava, which contains more vitamin C than mango, blackberry and honeydew melon combined all together.
All fruits mentioned above are great sources of vitamin C. Most of those fruits also contain many other important vitamins vital to the human body. Fruits listed above are a lot healthier sources of vitamin C than multivitamin pills or any other artificial vitamin C pills. Citruses and other fruits listed above taste really good and can be great and healthy alternatives to sweet snacks like chocolate, cookies or ice cream. For example, making fruit salad with some of those fruits can provide a required daily dose of vitamin C. However, fruit salad can also be a very healthy snack with no fat, cholesterol or sodium and with many various vitamins, minerals and fiber. After all no other snack can be so tasty and healthy at the same time.
