One of the first challenges facing any new transplant is uncovering the best grocery store in his or her neighborhood. Obviously, convenience to home, work, or school is the most immediate concern, but after that, the effect of that shopping trip on one's wallet is the true test of a good store.

"Let's go Krogering!" has been embedded in this Midwesterner's long-term memory - a successful slogan, no? - since early childhood, and I was pleased to discover a Kroger's cousin, Fry's, in my current residence of Arizona. Many of the best bargains at Fry's are indeed the Kroger's products.

On a hot day, Big K soda is my soda of choice. A twelve pack typically costs one to two dollars less than a more vividly-packaged twelve pack from Coke or Pepsi. And speaking of beverages, the Kroger pink lemonade mix makes a fine alternative to Country Time or Crystal Light. And for those cold Midwestern winters (or "chilly" Arizona evenings in January), the Kroger brand sugar-free hot cocoa mix beats that of Swiss Miss or Nestle, in my humble opinion.

Choosing products with the "Value" label is the secret to saving the most cash. Freezer bags, trash bags, soap, and other household products often cost half that of their name brand peers. From the produce section, I've purchased Value grapefruit and oranges and have been very satisfied the freshness and flavor of my citrus. From the frozen aisle, I always choose the Value veggies or Kroger ice cream products, and have not been disappointed. Recently, I have noticed Value chicken alongside Tyson's and other name brand options. While the price drop is compelling, I've yet to bring myself to choose a poultry product with "Value" stamped across its packaging. I'll spend the 88 cents on a loaf of Value bread, but I have to stop at poultry. Sales on other brands of meat and poultry are a pretty sure bet, and once your grocery list is checked to completion, you'll be pleasantly surprised at your total bill once the cashier swipes your club card.

Every glowing review, however, does have its downside. Some of the specialty organic products, namely tofu or canned products, actually may be cheaper at Whole Foods. And for the truly unique yet budget-friendly products, Trader Joe's cannot be beat.

I've tried Safeway, Albertson's, and Basha's, the local store. They may all be equidistant from my home base, but when it comes to the best deals, I'll choose Fry's.
