Ft. DeSoto Park

Sand,sea,and Porpoise Sitings

Charles Melius
Yesteday as I strolled on the beach.
Thunderstorms readied out in the breach.
Ft. Desoto the park,
Where I saw a shark,
Trolling swiftly a meal to beseech.

Wild birds and seagulls everywhere,
Swooping down to the water with care.
A Shiner to snatch,
Sharp beak with it catch.
Then fly off to eat it elsewhere.

A White Heron on bony long legs,
Waded into the shallows and kegs.
So slowly he'd lurk,
Then quickly a jerk.
Catch his prey never having to beg.

Like the Pelicans stalking the pier,
Nearby all the line and the gear.
They'd easily sneak,
A quick tasty treat.
Flying up to a light post so near.

Their beaks being fully engorged,
One way to the stomach be forged.
Head first very slow,
Tail first never go.
They'd swallow their fishy main course.

So sudden the wind began blowing,
The sand from the beach like it snowing.
Was time to pack up,
Get back to the truck,
Before the high tide came inflowing.

The swift clouds then began to darken,
And thunder I'd quickly to harken.
Away from the Gulf,
Get home myself.
Some day again soon re-embark on.
