Fuel for the Brain - Reading Activities for Your Child

Kevin Nurmi
Technology today allows us to view almost anything we want on a television screen, or a computer monitor. Videos, books, classes, and images are all things that can aid in education, but certainly should not be limited to. Reading books has been around since biblical times, and will continue to have a presence even with all the technology that is available today. Reading skills should be practiced when the child is young, as this is a key piece of knowledge that they will use for the rest of their life.

The first thing to do is check with your school to see if they offer reading classes. Even though some schools do not have as many after school activities as others, reading classes are relatively cheaper to run, therefore more schools offer this as an option.

Enrolling your child in a reading class can help your kids with spelling, idioms, diction, and phrases. Some of these classes use animated characters, illustrated picture books, rhymes, and interesting stories to capture the imagination of the younger readers.

Get your child excited to join a reading club. For example, if you child likes snakes, get him a book on snakes. From there, it may branch off into other ideas like wildlife. The key here is to assist your child in finding something he/she may like, as there are endless topics to choose from.

When your child is young, consider making reading a part of your nightly bedtime routine. Reading to your child can relax their mind and help them get better sleep. While reading to your child, you can pickup many clues as to what they like. If you are reading a story involving animals, maybe they ask questions on a particular animal that they are interested in. Another way to drive their excitement is to start conversations based on the story. You can ask "What do you think will happen to the little bear who got lost?" Interaction like this is an excellent way to get children to "think outside the box".

Do not let your child's reading habits be limited only at school or public libraries, but start a small collection of books at home. Books are available cheaply online from merchants such as amazon.com and half.com.

Reading is a skill that children need to learn at an early age. These skills will be used for the rest of their life. If one does not learn how to read at an early age, they may have difficulties with everyday tasks when they get older.
