Fuel Economy: How to Get Better Car Mileage

With the rising cost of fuel it is important to learn how to save fuel by getting better gas mileage. You may already know of some ways to help save fuel, but just in case, here are a few more tips to help you save money at the pump.

Where possible, accelerate gently, especially from a stop. An automatic transmission will up shift earlier for better mileage. With a manual, shift to higher gears as soon as possible, but avoid from straining the engine. Many newer cars have up shift lights on the dash to help guide you. When you come to a traffic light, toll booth, or slowed traffic, take your foot off the pedal and allow the car to coast to a stop. If you are stopping for more than a minute, turn off the engine.

Hold steady highway speeds. Generally, 40 m.p.h. is most economical, but if your transmission has a lockup clutch or overdrive, speeds of about 50 m.p.h. may be better. If you are unsure of what kind of transmission you have just ask your dealer. In climbing an upgrade, increase your speed gradually as you approach, then hold as steady a throttle position as possible, even if your speed decreases.

To reduce aerodynamic drag, keep your car's windows closed and use the vent in warm weather. If it is very hot, use the air conditioning rather than opening the windows at highway speeds. In cold weather, let the engine idle for 30 to 60 seconds, then drive no faster than 40 m.p.h. until the engine warms up.

Reduce car weight by leaving unnecessary heavy items out of the trunk. In winter, remove ice and snow from the perimeter of the underbody. On vacation, pack lightly. Avoid using a roof rack, which causes air drag.

Equipment Checks

Inflate tires to the maximum pressure shown on the sidewalls; check pressure often. If the tire wear is irregular, have the wheel alignment checked.

At least every two years, or 24,000 miles, have the engine turned and have the choke operation checked whenever you note a sharp drop in mileage. However, it is normal to get a lower mileage in short trips, cold weather, and heavy traffic.

I hope you will keep these tips somewhere in the back of your mind next time you are on the road. Good luck and safe driving.
