Fuel Pizza Partners with Others to Bring Field to Fork Pizza Gardens to Schools

In Charlotte, North Carolina, several schools will be part of the Field to Fork Pizza Garden Program which teaches children healthy habits. This is in an effort to interest children in nutrition while they are making a food they enjoy-pizza!

The idea of introducing children to gardening and using the produce they raise to make pizza is something the students are excited about. There are not many children who would say they do not like pizza, whether it is the healthy or high in fat variety.

The Fuel Pizza Field to Fork Program will give students an education in cooking and nutrition as well as gardening. To read more about the Fuel Pizza Café of Charlotte and how they are involved with the Mecklenburg County Fruit & Vegetable Coalition and Charlotte Green view the information here.

The Fuel Pizza Café Field to Fork Program is scheduled to be with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for approximately 6 months. Students involved in the program will make field trips to local Fuel Pizza Cafes to see how the produce becomes the final product in a commercial setting.

To view Fuel Pizza on Facebook go here. At this site you will read that Fuel Pizza was voted Best Pizza in Charlotte by City Search, Charlotte Magazine and Creative Loafing.

The 10 schools that will be involved in the program, and have Pizza Gardens at their locations include: Barringer Academic Center, Beverly Woods Elementary School, Blythe Elementary School, Cotswold Elementary School, Irwin Avenue Elementary School, Lake Wylie Elementary School, Midwood Middle School, Pinewood Elementary School, Olde Providence Elementary School, Turning Point Academy.

The Morgan School in Charlotte is going to be part of the program, however, it will offer produce grown in the greenhouse.

Programs similar to the Field to Fork Garden Program are used and appreciated in some schools throughout the United States. Students should certainly benefit from the efforts of those teaching nutrition and getting the chance to apply their knowledge.
