Fueling Your Business Ideas

Dawn Krakowski
Have you ever thought about starting your own business? You're not alone. Many people have dreamed of leaving their boring day jobs and becoming an entrepreneur; the problem is, every idea you've come up with is already taken. Or perhaps you would love to do one specific job or own a certain business, but you seem to see your dream on every other street corner in your town. You feel left out and discouraged and continue to sit behind your desk wasting your life away. Here are a few tips to get your creative juices flowing and keep you motivated in pursuing what you've dreamed about.

Tip #1 - Do Your Homework

If you have a great idea for a business but are afraid it may not be as successful as you would hope, do some research. First find out whether any products or similar services are already available in your area. If there is none, or very few, you have less competition to worry about and more potential profits to make. Secondly, find out if your service or product would be of any value in your area. Try conducting a survey to see if people would even have an interest, and be sure to scout out local demographics such as age or gender to determine how best to market your service or product. One last important piece of information to research is location. Where in your area would you most benefit from placing your business? Do you want to be in an area with a lot of foot traffic, more tourists, or perhaps even use other businesses to your advantage. For instance, if you wanted to open a coffee shop, try finding a spot close to offices, a mall, or even a local high school. You wouldn't want to take an exam without studying first, so why wouldn't you want to study up on an area first before putting your business right in the middle of it?

Tip #2 - Generating Fresh Ideas

So, now you've scouted out the area and have a good idea what you're up against. If you've found that your idea can be profitable and beneficial to the area, great! Good luck and I hope it becomes as successful as you've always dreamed it could be. But what if you found that there are already many businesses in the area that provide your product or service? Now you're right back where you started, down in the dumps feeling like you can never start your own business. Think again! You now know that you have tons of resources at your disposal that you can use to your advantage. Now, instead of having to start from ground zero and reinvent the wheel, just use what is already there. Let's say for example you've always wanted to start a bakery and be around that delicious food all day, but to your dismay, there are more bakeries than there are Starbucks! (And that's saying something!!) So, instead of putting up yet another bakery, create a contract and offer your services as someone who could deliver for the bakeries. Do they already deliver? Perhaps you could entice the locals into hiring you as a professional marketer to promote their business within the area. Market their services to local offices and advertise bulk amounts of donuts or pastries for morning meetings. In any case, take what is already there, and create a profitable business out of their services. Don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you to take over their business or tell someone else how things should be done, I'm merely saying find a creative way to use a pre-existing business to benefit both of you. Not only are you getting money from their profits, but the business is getting more business which in turn leads to more profits and more money coming your way!

In the end, business can be a great way to pursue a living, just as long as you don't trap yourself in feeling down in the dumps!
