Fujifilm FinePix Z33 Review: Underwater Camera on a Budget

Compact Camera for Your Next Aquatic Adventure

Josh Ryan
Small, light and colorful, the Fujifilm FinePix Z33 is the perfect accessory for your diving trips. It's completely waterproof and simple to operate with its point-and-shoot technology. Its portability makes it perfect for all your on the go needs, and you can find it easily if it so happens to slip out of your hand.

Plus, the Fujifilm FinePix Z33 is not just an underwater camera, as good as that is all by itself. For $160, you get the same stuff as with the Z30- AUTO and face detection, six pre-formatted settings for different situations (night portrait, backlit portrait, night, landscape, macro, and regular portrait), and automatic red-eye removal.

That's not where it ends with the waterproof Fujifilm FinePix Z33, though. It also has an anti-blurring mode to make your images stable even when you're capturing fast action, and Intelligent Flash, which will get your subject in full light without blowing out the background details.

In addition to the Fujifilm FinePix Z33's amazing still capture capabilities, it can also do videos. You can even combine a number of clips into one to form sort of a home movie. The video settings are just as impressive as those for the photos. The Fujifilm FinePix Z33 is really a good camera for capturing your everyday life, both above and under the water.

Now I haven't really said anything derogatory about the Fujifilm FinePix Z33, but there definitely have been some complaints. Many seem to have a problem with what they call graininess, but I have my doubts considering that this is a 10 Megapixel camera. You are more likely to get high ISO noise when the lighting is low than graininess.

However, you can remedy that problem by using flash on the Fujifilm FinePix Z33, as long as you're within ten feet of the subject. For anything further than that, all you'll get is a noisy picture, or else it will be underexposed. Don't turn the flash on when you don't need it. Otherwise, the camera will misjudge the amount of actual light and the quality of your images will suffer quite a bit. Instead, you should adjust the ISO settings on the Fujifilm FinePix Z33 for a clearer, lighter image or use flash and get up closer.

When you're underwater, you want something that will do what you need it to do without a lot of trouble. The Fujifilm FinePix Z33 is designed to let you get quality photos without having to do so many adjustments. Remember my tips for using flash and you should be well satisfied with it. Plus, it's not too expensive and the color makes it hard to lose. I guarantee you the Fujifilm FinePix Z33 is an asset to aquatic trips.

Just wanted to update, upon further investigation, Fuji did honour me with a new (refurbished) Z33WP.

I bought this camera for my daughter and the first time she took it in the pool it leaked. I took it to Fuji Canada and they were very quick to point out a crack right where the bolt screws the two halves together. Obvious to me this is a manufacture issue, they claimed that I must have dropped it, which I did not as it was a first time use and definately NOT dropped. Upon inspection that they could find no evidence of any bump, dent or anything to say theat it was dropped, the service rep went on to say that perhaps I had 'carried it to hard' therefore squeezing the camera to cause it to crack. My daughter is 14 and has never lifted a weight in her life heavier than a book...This company is ridiculous and they will say anything not to honour their warranty.
