Fujitsu LifeBook N6460 - to Buy? or Not to Buy?

David Crass
At first glance the Fujitsu LifeBook N6460 is a monster and might be a bit intimidating. Weighing in at a little over 10 lbs. this is not a laptop for the weak. Featuring true HD graphics it sports an ATI Radeon 2600hd graphics adapter (1440x900 native graphic resolution), a 2.1 sound system including a subwoofer mounted underneath, 5 USB 2.0 slots, 2 PC Express slots, a IEEE 1394 connector, phone and network adapters, Cd / DVD multi-format dual layer burner, and 2 gigs of ram.

This is the first laptop that I have seen with an HDMI input capable adapter. It comes pre-loaded with Windows Vista Ultimate edition, a fingerprint scanner, and an Intel Centrino duo processor running at 2.40 GHz (4mb L2 cache). This "laptop" is actually a new class of computers called "Desktop Replacements". While it does have a battery it is purely for UPS purposes and will not last more than 1 hour. It gets very warm underneath at times and should be placed on a laptop tray or on a table rather than your lap.

This computer has all the power you will need to play YouTube videos, surf the net, and check emails. It also has the capacity to play Blu-ray movies and the power for the heaviest of today's video games. I am very impressed with its raw power and lack of lag when processing data or opening programs. I have tested this system with World of Warcraft on 80% of graphics with very little lag. On full video WoW lags horribly.

This laptop is not ideal for the average office user but for any gamer wanting portability, without the hefty price tag, this is the computer for you. Lots of USB slots make it convenient to hookup external mouse, printer, and hard drives.

Pros: PC style power and usability, 17" HD screen, High-end ATI Radeon 2600HD Graphics adapter.

Cons: 10 lbs of weight is a lot to slam onto your lap or sling over your shoulders, but it beats carrying a full desktop around. The subwoofer is placed on the bottom of the computer and rumbles a lot when the bass kicks in.

MSRP: around $1500; E-Bay (referb or used): I purchased for just over $400
