"Kyle Week" is being held in honor of Kyle Dean Smith, a ten year old boy who has Acute Myeloid Leukemia. It will help to raise awareness and educate the students and community regarding this form of cancer. It will also help the students to cope with the tragedy of one of their own number suffering this illness. The week of activities is to take place on February 16-20, 2009.
Here is the school's itinerary for "Kyle Week" as sent in letters to the parents of every student of the school:
Each day of the week, the students have the opportunity to purchase the "right" to do something not normally allowed at the school for $1 per day. The "right" to wear hats can also be purchased for the entire week for a one-time cost of $5. The list of "rights" with their cooresponding days are below.
MONDAY: "Put A Cap On Leukemia Day"- students have the "right" to wear a hat all day.
TUESDAY: "'Chip'ping Away At A Cure"- students have the "right" to bring electronics to school, such as iPods, Gameboys, PSPs, MP3 players, etc. Cell phones and cameras are not included.
WEDNESDAY: "Dream For A Cure Day"- students have the "right" to wear pajamas bottoms to school. Pajama tops are not allowed. T-shirts or sweatshirts or similar daywear tops must be worn with the pajama bottoms.
THURSDAY: "Shining A Spotlight On Leukemia Day"- students have the "right" to wear sunglasses all day.
FRIDAY: "Fighting For Kyle Rally"- students will be attending an afternoon rally that wiill include events like a male beauty pageant where the contestants dress as women (Councilman Mike Taylor will be a contestant- be prepared for laughs), the wearing of orange Leukemia Awareness ribbons, temporary tatoos, face paint, and "Fighting For Kyle" t-shirts ordered specifically for the occasion. These t-shirts will be available for purchase mid-week for $6 each and will be in both child and adult sizes. Also, those students who wish to and who have parental permission will have their heads shaved on this day in a show of support for Smith.
Participation is optional for students and faculty and any of the public who may attend any of these events. ALL proceeds from "Kyle Week" will go to help defer the costs of processing tests as the family searches for a bone marrow donor for Smith.
Smith's family went to the school today to support the opening day's proceedings and plan to attend the events on Friday as well. Sporting hats, they were more than happy to pay for the "right" to wear the hats today and thank the children who are participating. They were eager to show their appreciation to the whole community in this way.
