Full Moon's Thunderstorm

Juniper Russo
Full moon's thunderstorm
Breaks a dying summer's sweat.
Damp air stinks of oil.

The heat index was nearly 110 degrees for almost an entire week in my home town. Finally, the full moon brought a torrential rainstorm that swept upward from the coast. It cooled the air quickly, but the storm carried the rank scent of petroleum-- perhaps a vestige of the BP oil spill 210 miles from my home. I wrote this haiku after spending a moment in the foul-smelling rain.
