Grandparents Communicate Often to Keep Close Bonds with Grandchildren
Communicating by Phone
Long distance phone calls are made easy these days. Most phone companies have special rates that ease financial burden. Cellular phones allow communication anywhere-anytime. Grandchildren love to tell their grandparents all the exciting events happening in their lives. In return, Grandparents love to hear voices of their grandchildren. I love that my kids have freedom to open the address book and dial-a-grandparent.
Reading Books
Grandparents can set up times to read books to grandchildren by phone. Grandchildren may follow along with their own copy. Older grandchildren can read stories to their grandparents. In addition, this is a fun way to accomplish reading homework.
Webcam Video Conferences
Webcams offer live interaction with grandchildren. A single webcam can be purchased for 30.00. There will need to be a webcam for each home. Set up the webcams and designate time for video conferences. Grandchildren will be delighted to have grandma and grandpa visit over the computer monitor.
Play Games Together on the Computer
There are safe websites where grandparents and grandchildren can play games together. Chess, checkers and card games are often our favorites. Simply set the time and place to meet online. Parents can sit with their children and assist with the chat function.
Emailing Correspondence
Grandparents and grandchildren can keep in touch by email. Attaching photos through email is easy and affordable. Children will further benefit by learning keyboarding skills.
Writing Letters
Children love getting mail. In return, grandchildren can draw pictures, press handprints or create crafts to send to their grandparents. Older grandchildren can write letters to their grandparents. As a parent, I know my house gets full of artwork from my kids. Sending a few pieces to grandma and grandpa frees up space. In addition, this is a great opportunity for children to learn their address.
Sending Videos
Grandparents can send videos reading stories, singing songs and performing puppet shows. Grandchildren will love the personalized message. Grandparents welcome and encourage videos in return from their grandchildren.
Grandparents play an important role in grandchildren's lives. They're great mentors to help them grow into loving, successful, and contributing citizens. Grandchildren bring youthful joy to grandparent's lives. Establishing and keeping these bonds will benefit the lives of the entire family.
