Fun Attractions to Take Your Date in Arthur, Illinois

A Romantic Trip to Amish Country

Ariana R. Cherry-Shearer
In the quaint small town of Arthur, Illinois is hidden little attractions that can make a date that seems like a walk back into historical times. While the town is quite small, there are shops, crafts, and restaurants with home cooked Amish foods that can make a date worth its while, and of course a good time as well.

One trip back in time in the Arthur area that a couple may take their date to is Rockome Gardens. At Rockome Gardens, the colorful spring and summer flowers are in full bloom, beautiful rock formations are decorated all around, old fashioned instrumental music plays in the background. Couples can take their date to the look out tower, and view all of the visitors and scenery from high above the grounds while enjoying a breeze of warm weather. After a moment's rest, you can get a few laughs from the tic tac toe chicken, and see who's smarter. For just a quarter, you can play a quick game against a chicken at one of America's simplest past time games. If you enjoy furry friends, visit the petting zoo and get to cuddle and feed animals such as goats and horses. To get a chance to see how crafts were made back in the day, visit Charlie Cox the potter and view handmade pottery like vases, pitchers and bowls. Throughout the season, Rockome also has many events and entertainment to attend such as a bluegrass festival, family music festival, pumpkin festival, car show, horse pulling and a variety of quilt and craft shows. With all of the attractions, events and scenery at Rockome Gardens, it makes a great place to spend the day with your date and a chance to spend some quality outdoor time in the sun as well.

After spending some time strolling through the gardens and enjoying each other's company at Rockome Gardens, you can finish your day with some down home Amish country cooking at Yoder's Restaurant also located in Arthur on Rt. 133 near Dollar General and Coach House Industries. At Yoder's Restaurant, you can order items off the menu such as homemade chicken noodles drenched over a big bowl of mashed potatoes, ribs, pork steak or some of their famous deep fried country fried chicken. At each table, homemade Amish made peanut butter and apple butter awaits you along with a warm plate of fresh bread. If you would rather get a taste of most of the menu items that Yoder's has to offer, order the buffet and get a mixture of mouth watering ham, fried chicken, party potatoes, homemade Amish noodles, corn, green beans and more. Before you leave, don't forget to order a slice of homemade pie such as peanut butter or fresh baked apple pie. The choice of pies may vary each day. The restaurant is usually a hustle and bustle mixture of both tourists and residents of the Arthur, Illinois area. Fresh smells of Amish cooking fill the air along with pleasant restaurant staff. While you wait to be seated, view the trinkets and crafts in the restaurant gift shop or purchase homemade goods such as cinnamon rolls or Amish made pies from the bakery. At Yoder's you definitely won't leave hungry, and perhaps just might come back for more again.

With a full stomach, the scents and colors of the gardens still fresh in your mind, visit the nearby city park for some rest and peace. The area is quiet, serene and peaceful with plenty of areas for sitting, or even open space to fly a kite. During Christmas, the park is lit up with colorful Christmas lights designs that can bring magic to a evening walk on a cold evening. During the warm months, its the perfect place for romantic picnics with the available small grills nearby -or you can always bring your own as well.

Arthur has much to bring you with these three attractions for any date. They are both great for first dates-and even returning dates as well. In Arthur, there is always something different happening with a variety of festivals, tastes and sights to see. It's a small town that takes you back in time and gives you the feeling of safety from a happy tight community.
