Fun but Forgotten Movies Blockbuster Sells for $2.99

Ever rent a movie and watch it only to realize you saw it before? Blockbuster Video is selling some older movies at an incredible price in order to reduce some of their inventory, many of which have all-star casts and were very popular when they were first released. As soon as you walk in the door at Blockbuster you're faced with posters throughout the store quoting "4 for $20" or "3 for $20" some of which are fairly recent movies. But if you know where to look, the store also has a few cardboard bins displaying new DVDs of older titles as low as $2.99 each.

I found a lot of fun movies that I thought I had never seen before. After watching them I realized they were movies I had in fact already seen several years before but had forgotten about them. It was fun remembering my way through each movie. Even though I knew the outcome, I still enjoyed the experience of watching the movies again with my teenagers who had never seen them before.

Here are four of the most fun but forgotten movies we really enjoyed watching as a family:

Summer School

This movie features Mark Harmon as a schoolteacher who is forced to skip his long planned vacation to Hawaii to teach summer school to a group of social misfits. The co-star, Kirstie Alley helps him through the summer as he struggles to keep his job and make a difference in the lives of each child. The movie is funny and touching at the same time.

Elizabethtown

Elizabethtown is a romantic and heartfelt movie about a man who loses his father and his job, but finds the love of his life on the way to visit his family. The chance encounter develops and unfolds with another all-star cast including Kirsten Dunst, Orlando Bloom, Susan Sarandon, Alec Baldwin, and Jessica Biel. The movie has an incredible soundtrack to go with it.

The Rainmaker

Based on the best seller by John Grisham, this movie features an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Jon Voight, Danny Devito, Claire Danes and Mickey Rourke. The story revolves around an inexperienced lawyer who is assigned "a high profile case" that he would unlikely win. Throughout the movie he uncovers details of the case that help him to expose the truth, while you sit on the edge of your seat waiting for the story to unfold.

The Stepford Wives

This twisted story is amusing and unusual but also has a huge cast of familiar and likable actors and actresses including Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, Faith Hill, and Glenn Close. The movie came out in 2004, so it was one of the newer movies I found in the cardboard bin. My daughter had seen this one but I hadn't so it was interesting to be on the other side of the table. As we watched the movie, she chuckled about scenes she remembered while I sat wondering what was going to happen. This movie is like a comical horror movie, totally unbelievable and preposterous at times, but very entertaining.

We purchased our movies at the Blockbuster on Jungerman Road in St. Peters, Missouri. But you can visit any Blockbuster for the same deal. Just ask someone at the counter where they keep the discounted movies under $9.99 and they should offer similar pricing if they have excess inventory as well. If you want you can even call the store before you go and ask what they have in the way of movies for sale. If they don't have any left, you should still think about renting these titles which should be in their older section of movies. They were amazingly entertaining.
