Fun and Cool Web Sites for Kids

And They're Safe

Josie Gonder
There are hundreds of web sites out there for kids to explore and the majority of them are safe. But when trying to find those sites, it's possible they might run across ones that are not so safe. So I have compiled a list of fun and cool web sites that both parents and kids will enjoy. I have personally explored these sites and found myself getting carried away with some of the activities. My inner child surfaced. Your kids will learn and have fun at same time.

Kids First

The Kids First web site is all about kids (http://www.kidsfirst.org/kidsfirst/categf.htm). Kids are the best people in the world for knowing what they like, so why not let them be the reviewers and write about their favorite videos, computer games, books and more. After parents choose, along with their kids, a video or a book, for example, they can review the product and let other kids, and parents know what they think. The site offers Fairytales, Literature, Educational/Instruction, How Tos, Holiday and more. Parents can read product reviews and articles to help them decide what is best for their kids. There's also a forum where kids and parents can exchange information, which allows you to find the best quality media for your kids. Overall, I think it's a great site for both kids and parents.

BJ Pinchbeck's Homework Helper

A great web site to help kids with their homework. BJ Pinchbeck, (http://school.discovery.com/homeworkhelp/bjpinchbeck/) a teenager himself, helps students find the information they need to finish homework for any school subject. Just look down middle column and you'll see homework links for Math, English, Science, etc. Homework is a part of life. There is no getting around it so why not get the help you need to succeed. Who else knows more about the drudgery of homework, than a teenager. His site contains over 700 links to sites that will help you with your homework.

Reading Rainbow

If you know anything about PBS, you know they have excellent family programming. One of the programs they sponsor is called Reading Rainbow (http://pbskids.org/readingrainbow/). It's an animated show that introduces kids to entertaining stories to read. The web site is just as entertaining for kids. Just click on one of the animated icons and it will take to an adventure of a lifetime. There are adventures, games, books to explore, activities to print and much more. Any kid would get lost exploring Reading Rainbow.

Global Children's Art Gallery

The Global Children's Art Gallery (http://www.naturalchild.com/gallery/) is a place where kids from around the world can display their artwork. Whether your kids create with paint, crayons or the computer, they will be welcomed among the other talented artist out there. Explore different cultures through the eyes of another child's art and let your kids show off their own talent.

Biography.com

Biography.com (http://www.biography.com/index.jsp) is a great resource when writing papers for school. Whether you want to know about Albert Einstein or Michael Jordan, just type their name in the search area and click go. Then click their names to read their life story. Biography.com also tells kids why these important people are famous, important dates in their lives, and what other famous people they worked with or knew. On the main page is a link to The History Channel were you can watch video clips of the person you are researching or any famous person you want to know about. This web site can actually make homework fun.

I hope you and your kids enjoy these web sites. They were not only fun, but education. But most importantly, they are safe for your kids.
