Fun, Creative Ideas for Decorating a Miniature Christmas Tree with Kids

Sally Albright
Last year I purchased a miniature Christmas tree for my kids to help decorate their room for the holiday season. My kids loved the festive touch it added to their room. If you are thinking of decorating a miniature Christmas tree with your kids I have some fun and creative ideas to help get you started.

Miniature Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas for Kids #1: Photo Ornaments

Christmas photo ornaments are easy to find and give you an opportunity to personalize your Christmas tree. You can find readymade ornaments in many department stores as well as your local card shop. Or for added fun you can create your own using a Christmas photo ornament kit purchased from a local craft shop. Once your ornaments have been filled with pictures let your children hang them proudly on their own miniature Christmas tree.

Miniature Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas for Kids #2: Annual Ornaments

Each year my mom purchases a Christmas ornament with the year displayed on it. You can allow your kids to purchase a Christmas ornament each year to add to their miniature Christmas tree. Or for more fun you can help your kids create a personalized Christmas ornament with the date written on it. As each year passes their tree will be filled with ornaments they've selected or made.

Miniature Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas for Kids #3: Christmas Countdown

If your kids are anxious for Christmas to arrive you can help them decorate their miniature Christmas tree to be used as a Christmas countdown. When I was a child my grandparents sent us reindeer ornaments, that when you squeezed them, their mouths would open and reveal a small piece of candy. You can view an example here. You can let your children hang these adorable reindeer, or something similar, on their miniature Christmas tree and let them take one off each day until Christmas arrives.

Miniature Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas for Kids #4: Decorating Party for Kids

One fun way for kids to decorate their miniature Christmas tree is to host a tree decorating party with their friends. Each child will bring their own Christmas tree and ornaments they picked out or made themselves, bringing enough for everyone's tree. When the friends arrive and the miniature Christmas trees are set up everyone will exchange ornaments and hang them on their trees.

Miniature Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas for Kids #5: Earring Tree

This one is for the girls. How much fun would it be to turn a miniature Christmas tree into a Christmas earring tree? Instead of ornaments your children can hang earrings on the tree that have a Christmas theme. You don't have to stop at earrings however. Toy Christmas themed rings, bracelets, and necklaces would work as well.

Miniature Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas for Kids #6: Take Clues from their Room

How is your child's room decorated? The theme of your child's room can help give you and your kids ideas on how to decorate their miniature Christmas tree. If your daughter has a room full of butterfly decorations they can decorate their miniature tree with butterflies or simply find ornaments in coordinating colors. If your child is fascinated with pirates they can hang plastic gold beads on the tree along with silver and gold ornaments.

Miniature Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas for Kids #7: Gingerbread

Making a gingerbread house can be messy and time consuming. Instead of creating a gingerbread house maybe you could consider making gingerbread ornaments and letting your kids decorate them to use on their miniature Christmas tree. Follow the recipe for gingerbread cookies, which can be found on the internet, and cut the dough using Christmas themed cookie cutters. Make sure to mark a hole at the top for stringing thread for hanging. Once the cookies have cooled your kids can decorate them using angel icing in various colors. After the icing has dried and the thread has been tied your kids can use their homemade ornaments for decorating their miniature Christmas tree.

Miniature Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas for Kids #8: Homemade Beaded Garlands

Let your kids get creative and have some fun by creating their own garlands to wrap around their miniature Christmas tree. To make their own garlands you will need to purchase plastic string used for making jewelry for children as well as beads in Christmas colors and/or themes. As you unwrap the string wrap it around the miniature Christmas tree to determine the length. Once you have determined the length cut the string and tie a knot in one end. Now let the kids string the Christmas beads onto the string in any order they like. Once finished tie a knot in the other end of the string and let your child wrap it around their miniature Christmas tree. You can purchase miniature bulb ornaments to compliment the homemade garland on the tree.
