Tom Hardy is starring in the new MMA film "Warrior" which pins two brothers with troubled pasts against each other. Here is a look at the actor playing ex-marine Tommy Roirdan in Warrior:
Background: Tom Hardy grew up in East Sheen, London. He has a self-destructive side to him from the result of not feeling good enough and not liking to be alone with his thoughts. In fact, one of the draws of acting for him is that it gets him out of his own head. In the past, he used drugs and alcohol to take him to that same place. He is sober now, but he became an alcoholic after starting to drink beer at age 13.
Fun fact: He was arrested at 15 years old for stealing a Mercedes, and was also kicked out of both public school and drama school for his bad behavior.
Tom Hardy on himself: "I was incredibly boring as a child, but I had a sense of humour."
Stuart: A Life Backwards. The actor called his role as a homeless alcoholic in an adaptation of Alexander Master's biography the best role he's had and probably ever will have.
Fun fact: He won a modeling contract at age 19.
Mad Max: Fury Road. He was cast in the remake of Mad Max. On playing Mad Max, the actor told The Guardian, "I've got to create the body of someone broken who survives from meal to meal. I want the muscles of a manual labourer who builds camps then disbands them." Fun fact: His dog was named after Mad Max.
On Mel Gibson's Mad Max: "He's a legend man, but he didn't do half the sh-t that we're going to be doing in this one, you can fit the entire f--king trilogy in the first 20 minutes of this one."
Fun fact: He didn't start really driving until he was 30. Before then, he just took public transportation.
The Warrior. The actor learned boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu for his role in the movie.
More Mad Max. "Thank god!" Quote by Tom Hardy on Tina Turner not being in the remake of Mad Max.
Fun fact: The actor has a son named Louis.
Inception. Director Christopher Nolan wanted Tom Hardy for his movie Inception because he's skilled at inhabiting a role.
Star Trek Nemesis: The actor thought him movie Star Trek Nemesis was going to make him a superstar.
