Fun Family Activities in Houston on Mother's Day
Fun for Mom Doesn't Have to Be Expensive This Mother's Day
Make a meal or dessert. Mom is usually the one in the kitchen, but give her a chance to put her feet up and relax while someone else makes her brunch, lunch or dinner! Incorporate her favorite recipes, and if she is so inclined, even offer to make her a mimosa. Little ones can also be involved in the cooking or baking process!
Plant a fruit or vegetable garden. Whether young or young-at-heart, all moms love to nourish not only the soul, but the body, too. Give Mom the gift that keeps giving by helping her plant a fruit or veggie garden that will be productive until next winter. Not much space? Try potted plants: tomatoes, peppers, and dwarf citrus trees are perfect for a small patio garden.
Spend a day at the zoo. When was the last time Mom was taken to the Houston Zoo? A family-friendly inexpensive activity that the whole family will enjoy, the zoo will remind Mom about her childhood, and let the kids in the family build new memories.
Visit a local park. Mom has no doubt been under stress, and a trip to your local park is just the solution! Houstonians are lucky to have so many options, including: Discovery Green (downtown), Memorial Park (610/Memorial), Hermann Park (Museum District), and others. Consider taking bikes to cover more territory.
Take a day trip. Houstonians have a lot of options when it comes to day trips. No matter which way we travel, we have a destination within a couple of hours' drive. Consider Galveston, Kemah, Brenham, Luling/Lockhart (especially for the barbecue lover), or even state parks like Lake Livingston or San Jacinto.
Stay in and pamper her. Instead of giving mom a day away at a spa, keep her at home so that you can enjoy her company. Let each member of the family help pamper mom through massages, foot rubs, facials, or any other body treatments that mom enjoys.
Have a museum day. Pick a museum that appeals to all members of your family; including Mom. A good number of Houston's museums are open on Sundays, and some are even free (Contemporary Arts Museum, The Menil Collection). Mom will appreciate the leisurely pace and the rest of the family will enjoy it too!
Make art (together!). Surprise Mom by pre-making a piece of art, or have the whole family contribute (including Mom!) to something special on Mother's Day. Whether it is a canvas that everyone helps to paint, or a small watercolor that the kids do, help Mom decorate her living space with something unique that will always remind her of her loved ones.
