Fun Family Activities for a Rainy Day

What do you do when you're stuck inside with the kids on a dreary, rainy day? Well, there are lots of options. When you get tired of listening to the kids whine about being bored, try one of these.

  • If the weather is warm enough and there is no thunder or lightening, grab an umbrella and go for a walk.
  • Weather permitting, put on bathing suits and play outside in the rain. You could even wash your hair in the rain, if it's raining hard enough!
  • Get out the photo albums. Kids love to see photos of themselves when they were younger, as well as pictures of their parents as children. Tell stories about the pictures as you page through the albums.
  • Spread a blanket on the floor and have an indoor picnic. Pack all your family's favorite finger foods and picnic treats. Include a jug of lemonade and plastic cups. Dress in your summer best and don't forget the sunglasses!
  • Make a blanket tent. Pretend to be camping and tell spooky stories by flashlight. For a special treat, serve s'mores. Sandwich a marshmallow and a square of chocolate between two graham crackers and heat for 10 to 15 seconds in the microwave. For a less messy and easier-to-eat treat for little fingers, combine Golden Grahams cereal, mini marshmallows and chocolate chips in a bowl and serve.
  • Bake cookies or cupcakes and allow kids to frost and decorate them. Use food coloring to turn white frosting into your children's favorite colors and set out a variety of toppings like sprinkles, assorted small candies, chocolate chips or shaved chocolate, white chocolate chips or butterscotch chips and banana slices or whole raspberries.
  • Hold a family talent show. Give family members time to prepare an individual performance, then let the kids work together to design a colorful program. Make some popcorn, then sit back and enjoy the show!
