Fun and Free Music Games for Your Baby

For the Baby Mozart in Your Home

Sabrina Young
Stuck inside and don't know what to do? Enjoy these fun music games for you and your baby. Enjoy bonding with your little one as you bang on pots and pans, sing a tune, and play with the Baby Mozart in your home. Include older children in these games for a time of creative family musical fun.

Karaoke Baby
Who said that only mommy and daddy can have fun with karaoke? Whether you have a real karaoke machine, a music video game like Rock Band, or even just a spoon and a CD player, you and your baby can enjoy singing up a storm to favorite tunes.

Baby Dance
Pump up your favorite songs on the radio, play some world music from Pandora, or turn on your i-Pod, then dance up a storm with your baby. Even if your baby can't dance on his or her own, you can dance for them. Nothing is funnier than watching an adult dancing to silly songs. Entertainment for all! (And you might burn a few calories, too).

Pots and Pans Drumset
Of course everyone has tried to give their baby some fun pots and pans to play. But did you know that the sound each pot and pan makes depends on its size? Your baby will have a blast as you give them big pots for a bass drum sound and smaller pans for a higher sound. Want to make a cymbal? The metal lid of a pot or even the top of the wok can work great for a cymbal or gong like sound. Don't just give your baby some wooden spoons. Give them metal spoons, a small strainer, or even a whisk. Watch as your baby experiments with the sounds and laughs with fun.

Music Keyboard Fun
You don't have to buy an expensive keyboard for your baby. You can easily fun an affordable (or even free) kid sized piano or electronic keyboard at thrift stores, garage sales, ebay, or freecycle. The more buttons the better. I have an old Yamaha educational keyboard which not only has great piano sounds, but has drumset sounds and built in nursery rhymes. My baby has a wonderful time playing music and listening to the songs, and I have a great time, too.

Wind Chime Fun
You can find wind chimes everywhere from your local department store to the dollar store. You can even make your own by hanging metal spoons from a string and lining them across a sturdy stick. (A favorite here in Kentucky). Place the musical wind chimes in front of your baby. Let your baby touch the wind chimes and hear the sounds. Try wind chimes of different sizes. This not only allows for some music fun, but also works on your baby's fine motor skills.
