Today's grandmothers love their grandkids, but don't they don't necessarily think of themselves as a "Grandma" in the traditional sense. These ladies want a name which reflects their young-at-heart attitude and will still be fun for the grandkids too. Take heart, you don't have to have the name "Grandma" to be a wonderful grandmother. Take some cues from other ladies who have been in your position and come up with your own fun name for grandmother instead of settling for being called "Grandma."
For instance, some grandmas prefer to be called by ethnic names versus the traditional American "Grandma." Jewish grandmothers can be called "Bubbe," which is the Hebrew word for grandmother. Likewise, Italian grandmas can be called "Nonna," Greek grandmothers can be called "Ya-Ya," and Hispanics grandmas can be called "Abuela."
If you're looking for more affectionate terms, then you can consider these fun grandma names such as "Mom-Mom", "MeeMah," or "Muv." "Granny" and "Gran" are also fun non-grandma names that can reflect your "I'm Not Grandma" attitude. "Gamma" and "Gammie" can be good choices too (especially since kids often have trouble saying their "Rs").
Don't think that you are stuck with these more mainstream grandmother names. Instead of going for these more traditional versions of "Grandma," modern grandmothers can also opt for new, fun names such as "G-ma" or "G-mom," which will let the world know that you are just as cool and hip as your grandkids are. "GiGi" and "MiMi" are two more modern, fun alternatives to being called "Grandma," along with the names "Mugga" and "Gaggie."
Whether you are thrilled at finally being able to be called "Grandma" or are looking for a more youthful alternative, being a grandmother should be a lot of fun. Don't think that you have to fit into the traditional "Grandma" role if you're not ready for the rocking chair. Be yourself and let your grandkids know that you can be fun and full of energy at any age!
