Fun Halloween Costumes You Can Make at Home

During the fall season, and the month of October, it's time to start getting scary and looking for those trick or treat Halloween Costumes. When you are on a budget or you can't afford fancy outlandish costumes, it could get a little difficult looking for ways to save money.

Through most of my childhood, a lot of our costumes were handmade and our family would find items throughout the house to make up our Halloween costumes. With rising prices of grocery items, fuel, and the cost of living expenses not equaling out, families are finding it hard for these "extras" that come along with the family living. If it is going to be difficult to purchase full Halloween costumes this year, then get on your creative thinking cap, and begin searching through old clothing, sewing boxes, or your make-up collection to see some ideas that you can put together. After finding materials throughout the house, then simple items such as hats, face paint, wigs, or other extra accessories will make it easier on the budget to purchase. After all, most Halloween costumes are only worn once a year, and unless you plan on wearing it again, there actually isn't a reason to spend a load of cash on one Halloween costume.

One idea for your child to dress up as for Halloween is perhaps a rock-star or a version of their favorite singer. For your little girl, find a party like dress, or tights and a big t-shirt with some words on it. They can appear as some type of 80's singer. Find her a big chunky black wig to put over her hair, and then give your little girl a pretty make-over with some pink lipstick, glitter around the eyes, and perhaps even paint a star near her eye. If you happen to have any old karaoke machines in the house with wireless microphones, or a toy microphone, then her outfit will be complete! For a little boy who might want to dress up as a rock-star, find an old torn up pair of jeans, and a black or white t-shirt. Then spike his hair with some gel and maybe even put on a fake clip on earring on one of his ears. Hand him a microphone, and your little boy will be ready to rock!

If your child would like to dress up as a senior citizen (a.k.a: "old person") for Halloween, then this is simple also. For a young girl, find a plain dress to wear that can be paired off with an old kitchen apron. Then simply tie her hair back into a bun, add some old glasses that aren't prescription or have a strong prescription, and perhaps add a pair of flat shoes such as moccasins. To add a bit of gray, buy some gray or white spray paint or pour baby powder in her hair. For a young boy, find some suspenders or a pair of trousers, give him a pair of old glasses, black shoes, and then spray paint his hair white or gray. This is a costume that is easy to pull up and they still look quite darling!

Last of all, the all time popular Halloween costume is a ghost costume. This is very easy and simple to do at home. You can mix it up as a ghost or a zombie. Find an old sheet and then spray paint it in different areas with gray or black. Cut holes out for eyes and then you are finished! For the times that your child may not want to wear the sheet, decorate their face with some face paint so they can appear as a zombie. Paint their face lightly with some white paint, and then add dark paint around their eyes. Pull it off with a white or black t-shirt, and a pair of black pants. Then, put white or gray spray paint in your child's hair. While they may not be in costume as a ghost, he/she can still be a zombie too. This is a great idea for two costumes all wrapped into one.

So if you are low on cash this Halloween, that doesn't mean that costumes still can't be fun. By borrowing accessories from friends or families, and finding treasures around the house, anything can be possible. All it takes is some imagination and a little sparkle and paint. Your children will happily saying trick or treat the moment you hand them their candy bag!
