Fun Hanukkah Crafts for Kids

Sage Adderley
A fantastic way to educate children about Hanukkah is to make crafts pertaining to the holiday. You can discuss Hanukkah traditions while working with the hands-on activities. If your child is already familiar with Hanukkah, the craft tutorials below are a wonderful way for you all to celebrate the holiday together and share you child's Hanukkah crafts with loved ones!

Menorah Paper Craft

Materials

9 Craft sticks (wooden popsicle sticks)
Glue
Yellow construction paper
Crayons
Scissors
Pencil
Blue cardstock

Your child will be creating their menorah on the blue sheet of cardstock. The first step is to have your child draw the base of the menorah onto the cardstock. Younger children may just want to draw a wide U shape with a stem in the middle, while older children can draw a more detailed menorah. The craft sticks will represent each candle in the menorah. Lay out your craft sticks prior to gluing them down. You'll want to make sure the craft stick in the very middle is taller than the others. When the sticks are in place, have your child draw nine tear drop shapes onto the yellow construction paper, then cut each one out. Each yellow piece will represent the flames for the candles. Glue them above the craft sticks. Apply a thin layer of glue onto the top of each flame, then sprinkle a bit of glitter on the layer of glue to give them a shimmer.

Clay Star of David

Materials

Self-hardening clay
Acrylic paint
Paintbrush

This tutorial is very simple, but your kids will have a lot of fun while working on this activity. Have your child roll out a chunk of the self-hardening clay into two triangles. They can play around with the triangles until they are happy with the size and thickness of the shapes. Have them turn one of the triangles upside down and press it on top of the other triangle to create the Star of David. Once the clay has fully hardened, the Star of David may be painted using the acrylic paint and paintbrush.

Fabric Dreidel

Materials

Cardstock
Pencil
Scissors
Sewing pins
Fabric (choose desired color or pattern)
Sewing needle
Thread
Pin cushion
Stuffing or cotton balls

First, you'll need to make a dreidel template. With your pencil, sketch an outline of a dreidel onto the sheet of cardstock. Encourage your child to draw the dreidel, suggesting they uncomplicate the design by drawing an upside down triangle underneath a rectangle. Don't forget to have them include a thinner rectangular shape in a vertical position on top of the large rectangle. Cut the dreidel shape out of the cardstock. Now you have a dreidel template to sew with! Lay the two squares of fabric on top of each other, so that the insides are facing each other. Using your sewing pins, attach the template to both squares of the fabric. Next, you will cut around the template and end up with two fabric dreidels. Pin these two pieces of fabric together and begin to hand sew all around the dreidel, leaving an opening at the tip of the dreidel. When everything is sewn shut, except the tip, fill it with your stuffing. You may need to use your pencil to push the stuffing into the smaller areas of the dreidel. Finally, you will stitch the tip of the dreidel closed!
