Fun Holiday Gift Ideas to Inspire Creativity

Julia Bodeeb
Most people are creative as kids but as we grow up often we lose time for creative pursuits. Thus it is fun to give out holiday gifts that inspire creativity. Think about what someone enjoys doing and then find a gift that inspires that certain type of creativity.

Art Supplies for Drawing or Painting

A basket or a small dresser full of art supplies is a wonderful gift for someone who likes to draw or paint. If a child likes art projects at school this would be a wonderful holiday gift for them.

Craft stores are full of amazing art supplies. You can find cheap art supplies at thrift shops and flea markets too. Also, you can shop for art supplies online at places like Etsy, Ebay and online stores like joggles.com or ArtchixStudio.com offer wonderful arts and crafts supplies.

Learn to Crochet Kit

Crochet is an old fashioned skill that is back in vogue again. Crochet hats are all the fashion rage. And on places like Etsy you will even find some beautiful crochet dresses, curtains, and jackets.

A crochet doesn't cost much, but it is a great gift to inspire creativity. Giving someone the gift of a new hobby gives them a way to relax and to learn how to create beautiful items.

Magnetic Poetry Set

The sets of magnetic words that are used to create poems are a fun gift for someone who enjoys writing and poetry. The words can be placed on the door of the refrigerator or any other metal surface. Many gift stores sell the poetry kits.

Box of Old Crystals

Flea markets are a great place to find old crystals of the type that are used on chandeliers or lamps. You can make so many things out of them. They are beautiful hung on a ribbon to form a garland to make a sparkly holiday decoration. If you intersperse the garlands with pine cones or hanging strings of cranberries it adds an extra touch of holiday cheer. Old crystals can also be hung on a gold or red ribbon to make ornaments for the Christmas tree.

Old crystals can also be added to a lamp to add some extra sparkle to the lamp shade. If you hand the crystals on a ribbon you can then glue the ribbon among the bottom edge of a lampshade.

Sewing Machine

A sewing machine is a great gift for anyone who has the patience or interest in making their own clothes. Giving a sewing machine to a teenager can help them save money on clothes and perhaps even spark an interest in a career in fashion.

My grandmother was a seamstress for most of her life. So I grew up with her sewing me beautiful clothes. She made the suit I wore to my first interview for a publishing job in NYC. So I like to sew too. I find you can make clothes that are unique and get a lot more compliments than store bought items when you sew.

A gift of a sewing machine could start someone off to a lifetime of creativity making clothes and gift items from fabric. It could also lead someone to a career in fashion design or just help them create beautiful items for the home.

Computer

If someone loves to write or to make designs a new computer is a fabulous gift. Computers are getting updated rapidly. Many people would appreciate the gift of a new computer that has some new tools that an older computer would not have.

A Journal or Sketch Pad

A blank journal or a fresh sketch pad is bliss to a creative person. These gifts can be found for low prices at the local thrift store or at garage sales.

Music

Many people find that listening to music helps get them in a creative mood. So give the gift of music to a creative person to help them get in the artistic flow and to relax. You can find cheap CDs on Ebay and at garage stores. Or go all out and get and load an i-pod for someone you know would like one.

Gift cards to i-tunes to download songs are also great gifts. They let someone pick the songs they want. Music is a precious gift that inspires creativity.

Musical Instrument or Music Lessons

If a child or adult is displaying an interest in music a gift of a musical instrument or music lessons will be appreciated. Developing someone's skill at creating or playing music will give them hours of joy and perhaps some ideas for careers in music too.

Art Lessons or Admission to Seminar

There are many art lessons, pottery making classes, writing seminars, knitting classes and any other type of art class that creative people would enjoy getting for a gift. Taking a class or a weekly seminar is a great way to get immersed in creativity. It is also fun to be around other creative people.
