Volunteering on Christmas is one of the most rewarding things you can do. You can go by yourself, but taking the whole family makes it even more rewarding and teaches children a lot about the real spirit of Christmas. There are many places that need volunteers on Christmas. Try looking up the local soup kitchens and asking if you and your family can help out for a bit. Even if you just stop by for an hour before returning to your own festivities, it will mean a lot to your family and to the soup kitchen.
Christmas night is a great night to go to the movies. If your movie theater is in a mall, the rest of the mall will likely be deserted and parking will be much easier to find. A movie is a great way to unwind after an exciting and hectic Christmas day. There are always a bunch of holiday-themes movies in the theaters to help you keep up with the holiday spirit. And a handful of them are usually family-friendly as well. If you are overfilled with holiday celebrations, there are always alternate choices as well.
Christmas Eve is a great night to go out to eat with your family if you don't have other plans. You can go to a family favorite, or try something new and fun. It might be a fun idea to try something new and exotic because most people eat familiar fare on Christmas day. Most Indian and Thai restaurants stay open on Christmas Eve as well.
If you haven't been invited to any Christmas parties, throw one of your own. All you need is some hot chocolate, egg nog, and printed out sheets of carols. Even if only your immediate family is there, it will be sure to become a new Christmas favorite. Everyone can have fun caroling and return to eat some freshly baked Christmas cookies.
Build a gingerbread house with your friends and family. You can hold a competition and form teams to see who can make the prettiest house. All you need is some freshly baked gingerbread, icing, and candy. After the competition is over, everyone wins because the houses are edible and delicious.
A family snowball fight is always fun, as long as everyone agrees to be a good sport. If there is adequate snow on the ground, you can build snow fortresses or igloos and make it an epic battle. Lay out the rules ahead of time so that everyone knows exactly how to play the game.
There are plenty of ways to start new Christmas traditions. The important thing is to find meaningful ways to spend time with the people important to you. Different activities suit different families, so try to find something that everyone involved will enjoy. Have a merry Christmas!
