Fun Ideas for Throwing a Valentine's Day-Themed Birthday Party for a Child

Sally Albright
Last year, my daughter's birthday party had to be postponed due to illness. We decided to have her make-up birthday party the week of Valentine's Day, and it was a load of fun. If your child's birthday is close to Valentine's Day, you can throw your child a fun Valentine's birthday party using some of these fun ideas.

Valentine's Day Birthday Party Invitations

Homemade birthday party invitations are fun for kids to make. Making invitations for your child's Valentine's Day birthday party can be easy using various art supplies. Items such as red and pink construction paper, glitter glue, and special edge cutting scissors can be used to create your own homemade Valentine's Day birthday party invitations. For an extra special touch you can include heart shaped lollipops with your Valentine's Day birthday party invitations.

Valentine's Day Birthday Party Decorations

Decorating your house for a Valentine's Day birthday party can be just as fun as the birthday party itself. Here are some fun decorations you can make for your child's Valentine's Day birthday party.

Paper hearts can easily be made and make great decorations for your child's Valentine's Day birthday party. To make paper hearts fold pink and red construction paper in half and cut out the shape of half hearts from the folded side. You can make small hearts, big hearts, tall skinny hearts, and short fat hearts to create a variety of fun hearts to decorate with. We decided to hang the hearts on our entryway window using double sided sticky tape. The hearts can also be hung the same way on the walls of your birthday party room.

Happy Birthday banners can easily be made for your child's Valentine's Day birthday party. Draw heart shapes onto pink construction paper and write a letter in each heart to spell out "Happy Birthday". Punch two holes onto the top of each paper using a hole punch. Weave pink or red ribbon through the holes to create your banner and hang.

Red or pink plain colored vinyl tablecloths can be used to top your table for your child's Valentine's Day birthday party. To add a bit of interest to your tablecloth you can sprinkle Valentine's Day themed confetti over the tablecloth. Another idea would be to use candy hearts in place of the Valentine's Day themed confetti, or along with the confetti to decorate your tabletop.

Valentine's Day Birthday Party Games and Activities

A child's birthday party can be fun when you set up special birthday party games and activities for the kids to play and engage in. For a Valentine's Day birthday party you can select games and activities which fit into the Valentine's Day theme.

One game the kids can play at your child's Valentine's Day birthday party is "Guess How Many". Set up a jar filled with Valentine's candy hearts and have each child try to guess how many candy hearts are in the jar. The child who guesses closest to the amount of candy hearts in the jar wins. You can use the candy heart filled jar as the prize for this fun Valentine's Day birthday party game.

A fun activity for kids to enjoy at your child's Valentine's Day birthday party is to decorate Valentine's cookies. Set up a table for the children to decorate their Valentine's Day cookies with several cookie decorating options. Set up the tables with paper plates filled with Valentine's shaped cookies along with cookie decorating supplies in the center of the table. Pink and red frosting, candy sprinkles, and colored sugars all make great options for decorating the Valentine's cookies with.

Valentine's Day bingo can be a fun game to play at your child's Valentine's Day themed birthday party. You can make up bingo cards using pink or red construction paper, writing the letters and numbers on the card just like on a typical bingo card. The kids can use Valentine's candy hearts as markers for their bingo cards. Instead of using bingo balls you can write the numbers on small heart shaped pieces of paper and place them into a bowl. Randomly pick numbers out of the bowl until a child claims bingo.

For a girl's Valentine's Day birthday party you can purchase beads at your local craft store that fit into the Valentine's Day theme. Also purchase special string to place the beads on to make fun Valentine's Day necklaces and bracelets. Another idea for making Valentine 's Day jewelry would be to purchase candy necklace and bracelet making kits.

Valentine's Day Birthday Party Goodie Bags

At the end of most birthday parties for children each guest usually receives goodie bags filled with fun toys and candy to bring home with them. Goodie bags for a Valentine's Day birthday party can include many fun items related to the Valentine's Day theme.

Shopping at your local dollar store is a smart choice for finding items for your Valentine's Day birthday party goodie bags. You can find items such as Valentine's pencils, pens, erasers, and candy for sale at your local dollar store. You can usually purchase these items in packs that can be split up between the goodie bags.

Instead of an actual goodie bag you can hand out Valentine's Day cards with candy attached to them as departure gifts. You can either purchase Valentine's Day card kits or create homemade Valentine's Day cards. Attach a small gift or candy to your Valentine's Day cards such as small packs of candy hearts or pencils.

A fun idea for creating your Valentine's Day birthday party goodie bags would be to hide a special "prize" inside. Take clear or Valentine's themed plastic bags and fill them with the same item such as candy hearts, red or pink jellybeans, and other Valentine's themed items. Next stuff a special prize inside of the bag hiding it in the center of the Valentine's Day themed items. Special prizes can include Valentine's rings, lip gloss, eraser, heart lollipop, or other small items.

Throwing a Valentine's Day birthday party for your child can be a fun way of celebrating their late January or February birthday. Your kids will have fun at their Valentine's Day themed birthday party using some of the ideas above.

  • Do something different... not a Valentine s Day th2/14/2011

I'm a Valentine's Day baby and I'm going to suggest you do something different than a Valentine's Day theme. I can't tell you how much I grew to hate heart shaped cakes and anything pink. My most memorable party was my 17th when everyone wore Halloween costumes! Be original and a Valentine's them isn't original!
