Fun Indoor Winter Activities to Keep Kids Warm: Knitting, Baking and More

Sally Albright
Wintertime brings cold weather that can sometimes make it unbearable for children to play outdoors. To keep the kids busy during the cold winter months, you can have them participate in some fun indoor activities that will help keep them warm. Here are some ideas for fun indoor activities your kids can enjoy during winter.

Indoor Winter Activities to Keep Kids Warm Idea #1: Learning to Knit

Knitting can be a fun activity for you to share with your kids. You can find child sized knitting needles at your local craft store for your kids to use. To help them learn to knit you can rent a book from your local library on learning how to knit. You can also find resources online that can help your children learn how to knit. Kids can knit hats and scarves which can help keep them warm when they are outdoors in the cold winter weather.

Indoor Winter Activities to Keep Kids Warm Idea #2: Homemade Hot Cocoa

Drinking hot cocoa is a great way of warming up during the cold winter months. There are many recipes you can find online and in cookbooks for making your own homemade hot cocoa. You can have your kids participate by measuring out the ingredients for the homemade hot cocoa. Once the hot cocoa has been poured into the mugs kids can top the hot cocoa with spray can whipped topping, marshmallows, and candy sprinkles.

Indoor Winter Activities to Keep Kids Warm Idea #3: Slumber Party

Slumber parties are fun for kids and can be a great indoor winter activity for your children to enjoy. Since camping outdoors during the winter may not be wise you can set up camp indoors using some of your camping equipment. Drag out the sleeping bags onto the living room floor for your children to bundle up in. If you have a fireplace you can roast some marshmallows for your children to munch on. You can also make s'mores in your microwave by layering a graham cracker with a piece of chocolate and a marshmallow. Microwave until the chocolate has become slightly melted. Take the layered graham cracker out of the microwave and top with another graham cracker to create your s'mores. To make it seem more like a camping trip you can set up a child sized tent in your living room for the kids to sleep in. Or you can help your kids make a makeshift tent out of blankets.

Indoor Winter Activities to Keep Kids Warm Idea #4: Bake Cookies

Baking requires heat from the oven which can help to warm up the house. Baking delicious cookies is a fun way for kids to keep warm indoors during the winter months. Kids can make many different types of cookies such as sugar cookies or chocolate chip cookies. Kids can help in many different ways based on their age group. Kids can measure out ingredients, stir the ingredients together, cut out shapes from the cookie batter, or drop cookies onto a cookie sheet. Follow the cookie baking session with a taste test while the cookies are still warm.

Indoor Winter Activities to Keep Kids Warm Idea #5: Tropical Vacation

Packing up your things and heading for the beach may seem impossible during the cold winter months. Rather than going out to the beach, you can create a tropical beach feeling inside of your home. Sometimes all someone needs to feel warmer is to think of being in a warm place. You can throw a fun tropical party for your kids during the winter months to help forget about the miserably cold weather outdoors. You can turn on some tropical music, serve tropical fruit drinks, and inflate a beach ball for throwing around the house. Kids can wear sunglasses and sun visors to help give them the feeling of being in a warm tropical climate.

Keeping your kids warm during the winter months can be fun with these indoor winter activity ideas. If your kids are bored from being stuck indoors during the winter you can use these ideas to help keep them entertained and get rid of the winter blues.

Good ideas! It can be a challenge keeping kids busy when they can't play outdoors.

Such fun, creative ideas! Just out of curiosity, at what age can a child learn to knit? I don't know how myself, but I can learn. I've heard there are real benefits for developing fine motor skills, concentration, and math. I'm just thinking of two little hands in particular that need to be kept busy, busy, busy!
