Fun & Inexpensive Summer Activities

Bored This Summer? Here's a List of Things You Can Do on a Budget

Christopher Cacace
Summer's a great season for kicking back and relaxing with friends. Don't have a clue what you should do? Below you'll find some fun activities that everyone can enjoy at minimal cost.

Have a barbeque: A classic summer activity. Take some time to enjoy the beautiful weather and eat some good food. Even better if you have access to a pool.

Have a picnic: Bust out the potato salad and find a nice spot under a tree.

Pick-up sport: Another activity that takes advantage of the weather. Try organizing a game or two, it could potentially blossom into a weekly event. Ideas for sports are soccer, Frisbee, softball, kickball (a personal favorite), basketball, volleyball or football. All of these are easy to assemble, meaning the materials needed can be found in any Wal-Mart and easily played with at a local park.

Beach: Another classic. Swimming, tanning and relaxing are cheap things you can do by a beach. I recommend a public beach, since privates beaches usually require you to pay. Fun for the whole family. If you can't find near you, search online with Google Maps or by using a similar program.

Bike ride: You obviously need a bike for this, fortunately bikes can be found pretty cheap on Craigslist nowadays. Many cities and towns in their attempt to "go green" have created more bike trails than in years past, trails you should certainly take advantage of given the chance. A great way to exercise too, riding for a few hours a day will get you in tip-top shape in weeks. Many charities also plan donation and "fun" rides during the summer, which don't require you to have a pro-level bicycle or anything like that. Try to assemble a team together and raise some donations, it's all for a good cause and it can be quite fun.

Concert: Bands love to tour over the summer, not only are the kids out of school but most offices end work early on the weekend. Stubhub.com sells tickets pretty cheap, for just about any concert or event you can imagine.

Baseball game: Our nation's greatest past time fortunately plays most of their games during the summer. Stubhub again is a great resource for cheap tickets.

Amusement Park: Can be fairly expensive, but certainly proves to be a fun day. Six Flags has a ton of locations around the country, if there isn't one near you look for a private amusement park. Some even have fireworks on a weekly basis.

Movies: Enjoy a "summer blockbuster" and free air conditioning.

Museum: Museum admission is pretty cheap, it's a great way to expand your mind and learn for a day. Also air conditioned.

Road trip: Very fun to do over the summer, look for something of interest a few hours away and make a day trip of it. Explore a city, or visit a town you've never been to. Thankfully gas is cheaper than it was last summer.
