Fun at the Library

Denise
If you had to cut a lot of corners because you lost your job, or simply cannot afford it you can still have fun in your hometown. I cannot speak for every library across the United States, but here, in Upstate New York, there are a lot of great free programs to enjoy for your whole family.

Movies
Libraries always have the latest flicks. Why bother going to a theater if you can just borrow the DVD for free? There are also family movie nights, kids movies, teen movies as well as movies for adults shown at your library on a big screen. A lot of them even throw in free popcorn! Some movies I have borrowed were: Meet The Browns, Howl's Moving Castle, Stardust, College Road Trip, Guess Who, What Happens In Vegas and 27 Dresses.

Games
If you can't afford to buy the latest game system, don't sweat it. You can go to your local library and play new games on the most popular game systems. There's the DDR game, and Guitar Hero III, just to name a couple. There are even board game nights.

Adult Programs
There are so many, here's few things that adults can enjoy at libraries: Knitting, concerts, Tax help, Health information, Starting your own business, cooking classes, writers groups, book clubs and more. Some programs, like basket weaving will cost a fee for materials, but other than that, the programs are free.

Kid Programs
You are probably familiar with story times, but there are craft days, and special programs with entertainment like magicians, singers, and artists.

Teen Programs
Teens can be a part of the advisory council at their library, hang out play games and eat, play video games, be a part of a book club, anime club, create cool crafts and much more.

Download it
Don't feel like going out to the library? That's alright. You can download audio books, e-books and music right from home! You can download it to your Mp3 player or another device. If you are unsure how to use it, the library can show you how.

There are also programs like Banned Book Week, The Summer Reading Program for children and teens, learning English, computer training(general and advanced), spoken word poetry, and Open Mic nights. Your library should have a website. Log on and find out the list of events that they have. Before you think of spending any money, check out your local library to have a free, informative, but most of all-fun summer.

Many libraries provide free popcorn for movies. Other programs offer some type of refreshments, too.

Great info about what you can do for free (or cheap) at the local library.

I don't take advantage of the other things my local library offers, but the pages of their books sure get a workout.
