Fun Recycle: Pull Tab Crochet!

A Clever Way to Use Something that Would Otherwise Be Discarded

Clotilde Menendez
You can save pull tabs and keep something from going into the trash to add it to your stash of crochet materials and make really clever articles with them.

1. Wash the tabs.
2. Examine them for sharp edges where they were pulled off the can, and if necessary, use a pair of pliers to turn those edges upward at the back so that you
can crochet safely and also for the safety of anyone handling the item you will be making.
3. Select the thread or yarn you will be using. You can use No. 10 cotton crochet thread but also yarn. You can crochet with scraps of various color if you like.
4. Select an appropriate hook size for the thread or yarn you have chosen.

Now comes the fun! Take the pull tab and depending on the effect you want, crochet on its side, bottom or upper part (around the outer side of the open tab), once you have finished with one, fasten off and continue with the next one.

To form items, join tabs one to the another using single crochet or slip stitch.
You can make many kinds of items: Bags, table runners, place mats, fridgies, your imagination is the limit!
