Fun Sex Determination Old Wives Tales

Having given birth to two beautiful baby boys, one of the thing that was most surprising and amusing are the plethora of old wives tales about pregnancy, particularly about what sex the baby will be. Ask a mother, and she will tell you that this is a standard question throughout pregnancy, "Do you know the sex?" "What do you want it to be?" These questions are most often followed with a suggestion about how you can tell what it will be and an opinion of which they would rather have (boy or girl).

One of the most frequent old wives tale I have heard are the variations on how you are carrying. For instance, if you are carrying low, you are having a boy. If you are carrying high, it is a girl. As I mentioned before I gave birth to two boys, and I carried one high and one low. The other carrying myth is that if your pregnancy is carried in front, it is a boy (true for me in both pregnancies) and if you carry white it is a girl.

While these myths are mostly disproven as a whole, at least they sound reasonable. One of the funniest versions of sex determination I have heard is that if you pee on Drano, the color will change to a blue and if it doesn't change or changes to a green you are having a girl. How this works, I couldn't possibly begin to explain, nor can I imagine a scenario in which someone urinated on Drano enough times to determine this pattern, but it is out there none-the-less! Do be careful if you decide to try this, as staying away from cleaning chemicals after conception is a good idea.

Want to try for one specific sex or another? There are old wives tales that apply before conception as well. For instance, in the vein of boys are salty and girls are sweet, if you (both of you) eat red meat (the rarer the better) and salty snacks you will conceive a boy. For conceiving a girl, chow down on fish and vegetables as well as lots of sweets!

Besides eating, the tales go that conceiving while standing up, sleeping with the woman on the left side, during a quarter moon, on an odd day of the month and with the woman's head pointing north are purported to bring you a boy. For girls, it is missionary position, in the afternoon, during a full moon and on the even days of the month.
