Fun in the Sun Without Breaking the Bank

Ideas to Entertain Yourself During Spring Break Without Cracking Open Your Life Savings

Seth Helix
Spring is upon us once more and in light of the declining economy, many of the adults and even some of the kids are looking for ways to save some money but still have all the fun of a normal spring break. It does not take a complete luxury cruise to Hawaii or even a trip to the nearest resort to spend quality, enjoyable time with your family, contrary to what some may believe. Here are some ways in which you can spend your vacation time completely entertained, and if not at least you have something to while away the time.

1) Entertainment doesn't always have to be found away from home. Often times people can take up hobbies at home such as building models or even just kicking back and watching a family movie. There is also the option of hosting pool parties and inviting some friends over and it doesn't cost too much either. That is unless you don't have a pool nor a friend or family member who owns one, in which case the costs will be fairly high.

2) When unknowing of what to do, the internet is always open. Search online and you can find dozens of different local public facilities such as museums, conventions, movies, etc. Most likely you will eventually find something worthwhile as not many people actually know their whole town from top to bottom, at least as far as I know.

3) Even if you are not a tourist you can still enjoy the beauty of your city or its landscape on a little sightseeing tour by car. It's fairly likely that you have not seen all your city has to offer nor everything around it, in which case this will give you something to gawk at and still learn more about where you live. Unfortunately, due to the rising gas prices this could become a bit expensive depending on how many times you do it and how long you drive, but its not as costly as many of the alternatives.

4) If nothing else you can still offer to do some community service work for your local nonprofit organization. There will likely be at least a few that are willing to accept you and though it may seem unfavorable to do work in the hot sun, it allows for some family bonding as they discuss everyday topics while helping their community.

5) This may not apply to every state, but you can always visit your local theme or amusement park for the day. If you search online there is a chance that one of them is having some sort of promotion in which you can get a discount on tickets. I hope I need not have to explain what to do at a theme park because the options are so numerous and I'm assuming everyone has visited one at least once. If not, however, just visit one and experience the rush for yourself. This may be one of the least favored choices for the cost-conscious person because even with a discounted admission, food inside the parks will probably bring the expenses back up. Once again, considering the alternatives, this may be cheap to some.

6) Yet another slightly expensive option, you can choose to take your family to the mall for a day or two out of your week. You can always hunt for bargains at your local outlet or, if you're eying your budget to the extreme, window shop the entire time. Even if you come out of the stores with nothing, at least you had time to spend with your friends or family.

7) To the more finicky person, the idea of camping outside in a tent or such may not be an option, what with all the bugs coming out, but sleeping beneath a starlit sky can be a truly enjoyable experience. Staring at the stars gives you an opportunity to talk as you and the rest of your family view the glow above. Unfortunately, if you live in a big city, this may not be anywhere near an option for you as you will probably have to travel a few miles to be secluded from the glare of city lights.
