Fun Sunday School Games: Memory Verse Human Popcorn

Becky Fuentes
This fun, memory verse game will help your class learn their memory verse and use up some of that energy that they are so antsy to burn off. In this game, your students will pretend to be just like human popcorn kernels and will pop up at specific times will reciting their memory verse.

Preparation

The preparation for this game is really simple. On a piece of poster board or construction paper, draw a piece of popcorn. If you are not the creative, artsy type, then try recruiting one of the teenagers from the youth Sunday School class or another teacher to help you with this part. If you would rather not draw it, you can always go online and find an image of popcorn, print it out in color ink and paste it to your poster board or construction paper. This will be your popcorn card for the game. The card does not have to be very big. I've found that using a square the size of a post-it note works best.

Game

You should have your memory verse posted in a place where all the kids in your Sunday School class can see it. I like to write it in large letters on my dry erase board, but you can also use a large poster or some other form of displaying your memory verse.

Gather all your kids up and tell them that they are now going to play the Memory Verse Human Popcorn Game and THEY get to be the popcorn. But first, lead them through saying the memory verse together as a group a few times to get them familiar with all the words and the scripture reference.

Once your class has warmed up a little, take the popcorn card and place it directly over one of the words in your memory verse. Tell your class that you're going to repeat the memory verse again, but this time when they come to the word with the popcorn card over it they're going to pop up just like popcorn kernels. Have them practice popping up and sitting back down, then begin the game.

Switch the popcorn card to another word in the memory verse for each round and keep repeating the game, having the children pop up every time they come to a word with the popcorn card over it.

If you want to make the game a little more fun and challenging, try using 2 or 3 popcorn cards instead of just the one. If you have made enough popcorn cards for the memory verse, then work up to covering up each word with a popcorn card. On the last round, your kids should pop up for each word of the memory verse.
