Summertime is over and the weather is getting cooler, but the fun doesn't end here! There is always a variety of events and festivals to enjoy in the Rockford area after labor day, and throughout the year.

Starting with festivals and music, Roctoberfest is a benefit for the American Cancer society on September 25th and 26th 2009 in the parking lot of Old Chicago, 6820 East state street, Rockford, Illinois. Local musicians will be entertaining, and great food and drink will be available for purchase at the festival. Gate admission is $10.00 and is good for both days, however tickets can be purchased at the gate for $10.00 and are good for one day. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Old Chicago, Culture Shock, and The Inspiration. For more information on this event and the cause they support see their website at http://www.rockinforareason.org/

Food is another good reason thousands of people will gather together in Northern Illinois, and the Annual 2009 Chili Shoot Out at the Rockford Speedway in Loves Park, Illinois will boast great chili, and live music. Admission to this event on October 10th will be $7.00, or $5.00 with a non perishable food donation to support the Rock River Valley pantry. Children under 5 are admitted free. To learn more about this event, please see their website at http://www.chilishootout.com/

If you are looking for a scenic drive and some real unique fun on October 10th, take a ride on Highway 2 toward Byron, Illinois for the Turkey Testicle festival! Yes, you heard me right, and this festival is always fun with something to see, and something to eat too! Don't worry, you don't have to eat the testicles, but it's always fun to say you tried it, and pick up a t-shirt at Union Street Station. Great ride on Highway 2 for motorcycle enthusiasts This may not be a child friendly festival as much of the festivities are on tavern grounds and alcohol is served, however I cannot verify this due to lack of information. This festival is posted online, at City of Byron's website, and you may wish to call ahead to ensure that there is a festival, and whether or not children are allowed on grounds..http://byron.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=NONE&SEC={09CFE1E8-FE37-4345-B9B7-9BEF3C501B87}

If money is tight, enjoy a long walk through Sinnissippi Gardens and along the Rock River on the recreation path. The path and the gardens are supported by Rockford Park District, and the beauty of the changing fall leaves can't be ignored. This is a family oriented and family friendly activity, and can be enjoyed during the year for no cost. The recreation path is perfect for those walking, jogging, or biking, and provides a scenic route to the north of Sinnissippi Park. Enjoy the view and get some exercise, take pictures, or relax on a bench-or picnic at one of the many parks along the path. To learn more about the many parks supported by Rockford Park District and the recreation paths in Rockford, visit http://www.rockfordparkdistrict.org/

Klehm Arboretum and botanical gardens is open year-round, with limited hours during certain times of the year, and is free with donation on Mondays. Visit during every season for beautiful color displays! For more information visit them at http://www.klehm.org/

For something else to do that is free, enjoy Anderson Japanese gardens in Rockford, Illinois after November 1st, when they are off season. Just call to ensure that the gardens are open, as weather conditions must be considered. The gardens also boast a restaurant and a gift shop. Reservations are strongly suggested for dining. You may call ahead or learn more about Anderson Gardens by visiting their website at http://andersongardens.org/

Edward's apple orchard in Poplar grove, Illinois is a great family fun activity, and is less than 30 minutes from Rockford. I recommend calling ahead for prices and activities.
