Fun Things to Do While Visting Vermont in Fall

Fall in Vermont is More Than Scenery!

Autumn in Vermont is a spectacular time of year. If you and your family want to visit and see the spectacular foliage, you might also want to know what other fun things there are to do in Vermont during the Autumn season.

Vermont's Route 100 is famous for its foliage, a beautiful waterfall (and great picture taking spot) and the fact that if you are traveling north, you'll eventually come to Waterbury's Ben and Jerry's Factory, the place where they make some of the best ice cream on the planet. Take the tour, watch a video on how the ice cream is made and get a free sample at the end (tour during the week and you'll get to see the ice cream being made!). They also have the "Ice Cream Graveyard" where headstones stand in memoriam of past ice cream flavors no longer in production (great for pictures!), picnic spots and beautiful views. Waterbury is not far from Stowe, Vermont, where they have great shops (skiing in the Winter) and the Trapp Family Lodge (where the Von Trapps of "The Sound of Music" fame came to live) where the views are nothing short of spectacular no matter what time of year you visit.

If you decide to travel along Route 7, which also has great views and runs straight through Vermont's biggest cities and towns, you find a whole host of things to do. Starting in Burlington, walk along Church Street and Burlington's water front where there are tons of shops and restaurants to easily keep you busy for a day. Travel just a bit south to Shelburne and visit Shelburne Farms, where they have their annual art sale through October 22nd, 2006. On Saturday, October 28th, you can take their "Haunted Harvest: Who's Eating Whooo?" tour (non-spooky). On November 4th, you can become farmers for a day and help with chores and get to meet the animals!

Continuing south be sure to stop in Middlebury, Vt to pick up a Woody Jackson print, tour the historic "Marble Works" and shop the great downtown businesses.

Keep on driving to Rutland, Vermont and take a little detour over to Woodstock (follow Route 4 East). Woodstock is home to fabulous shops and artisans, and the picturesque Vermont town might just make you want to move. Support the "Woodstock Glad Rags Sale" on October 28th, from which the proceeds go to local charities.

Drive back over to Rutland and continue south on Route 7 until you get to Bennington, (though be sure to stop every so often and take pictures of the fabulous fall scenery). Visit "The Apple Barn" just outside of Bennington (to the south) and pick up one of the heaviest and most delicious pies you'll ever get (or enjoy a piece right there, paired with your favorite ice cream). Pick up apples to munch on on your way home (there's a variety for everyone) and take a few other great Vermont products with you. Don't forget to do the corn maze out back ($3 a person). It's great fun for the kids, and surprisingly not that easy to get out of. You'll definitely get your money's worth (and don't forget your camera - -there's lots of great picture taking opportunities). Bennington also has great shops and the Bennington Monument, a tribute to the Battle of Bennington.

Enjoy Vermont's incredible fall foliage while you tour the state and support local businesses and events. You'll have a memorable experience!
