Fun Valentine's Day Movies

J. Darling
Romance films just aren't my thing. I have nothing against romance, I just don't normally find myself in the mood to have my heart torn out and crying at the end of movie night. However, every now and then I stumble across a movie where the "love story" is either a subtle sub-plot or portrayed in a way that is so funny, quirky, or surreal that I have to embrace it. Here's a list of some of those movies, just in time to rent for Valentine's Day.

The Wedding Singer: As a child of the 80's and someone who adores 80's music (and Drew Barrymore), this is a must-see romantic comedy. Adam Sandler stars as a jilted wedding singer who falls in love with a co-worker, just as she's about to marry a colossal douchebag.

Sixteen Candles: In this John Hughes film, Molly Ringwald's character, Samantha, is about to turn 16. However, her Sweet Sixteen is being overshadowed by her older sister's upcoming nuptials. You can watch Samantha's frustration and embarrassment throughout the movie. She's an average teenage girl who wants a guy whom she thinks is out of her league but who is pursued by the school's biggest geek. Memorable characters ( Long Duk Dong), an out of control house party, and a solid plot make this one of the best teenage movies ever.

High Fidelity: Rob Gordon, a record store owner, takes us on a trip down the memory lane of girlfriends past after being dumped by Laura. While analyzing the relationships in an attempt to figure out what his problem is, he tries to win back Laura's affection. Through clever and witty narration, you can feel Rob's struggle to understand women and why he's had such bad luck with them. The soundtrack is also awesome.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: If you could erase parts of your memory to forget unpleasant things, would you? In this movie, one man decides to have a procedure to erase his ex-girlfriend from his memory in retaliation for her having him removed from hers. During the procedure, he decides that he may not really want Clementine erased from his mind totally.

Eagle vs. Shark: Jemaine Clement of "Flight of the Concords" plays the role of Jarrod, who is oblivious that shy "Meaty Boy" employee Lily has a giant crush on him until she offers him some free food one day. One thing leads to another, there are shark and eagle costumes, some hooking up, and then a road trip to Jarrod's family's home. Jarrod plans to exact revenge on a high school and win the heart of another girl, dumping Lily. The absurd dialogue reminded me of Napoleon Dynamite, and the two films have been compared quite frequently.

Those are just five of my favorites. Here are some other recommendations:
Pretty in Pink
The 40 Year-Old Virgin
Edward Scissorhands
The Princess Bride
Clerks 2 (Not a romantic comedy, but there's a love story there. No, not involving Jay and Silent Bob!)
