Announcing Before Birth
If your family likes to play games, try this idea. Start a game of charades. Then, if you're having a girl, first act out sugar. You can act out putting spoons of sugar into tea. Next act out spice. Pretend to be cooking and keep adding spices to your pot as you stir. Finally, act out nice. Just act like a nice person...smile a lot and shake hands and such. If you're having a boy, first act out snips. Pretend to snip things with scissors. This one probably won't get guessed! Just tell people what it was after time is up. Next act out snails. Pretend to be a snail...inch slowly on your hands and knees on the ground. Finally act out puppy dog tails...which can be another hard one so if someone simply guesses tails you can count it as right. Hope fully by the end of the three clues, someone will have caught your drift and guessed that your giving clues as to the gender of your baby!
Next time people are over leave little hints around your house...a pink pillow on the couch, blue flowers in a vase, a pile of princess DVDs or a football on the table, or a pink or blue baby toothbrush in the bathroom. You can also show off the nursery (beforehand, add a few girly or boyish touches to make it obvious which you're having!)
Surprise the grandparents-to-be with a pink or blue bouquet of flowers or bunch of balloons.
Build your registry online and fill it with pink or blue items. Then tell people you need help deciding what to add to your registry, best baby brands, and such. Then open your registry on a computer and watch their faces as they realize whether it's a boy or a girl!
Announcing After the Birth
If you're waiting till the birth to find out your baby's gender, here are a few ideas for telling people what you had:
Let your husband announce the gender to you! When the baby comes out, have the doctor or midwife face the baby to your husband so he can announce, "It's a girl!" or "It's a boy!" to you and those in the room.
For friends and family members that are out in the waiting room, bring little pink and blue favors to pass out after the birth. Give them out when you go into the waiting room to announce that your wife had the baby. Some ideas are chocolate in a pink or blue wrapper, pink or blue frosted cupcakes, or pink or blue small photo frames. The items in the color of the gender you did not have can be given to the labor and delivery nurses to share (if it's a food item), or if it's a baby item the nurses can pass them out to the other laboring moms once they have their baby.
Bring two shirts, one pink and one blue. After your baby is born, put on the appropriate-colored shirt and go into the waiting room.
