Fun Ways to Use Color Clip-In Hair Extensions

S. Whithers
Coloring your hair can be a fun way to express yourself but many people are scared away from it by the commitment and possible dangers of hair dyes. Using clip-in (sometimes called clip-on) hair extensions is an easy way to change up your hairdo without all the commitment. Colored clip-in hair extensions are strips of synthetic or human hair that have already been dyed and are sewn to hair clips. You can get them a multitude of colors as they come in anywhere from flamboyantly bright to completely natural. With so many options it can be difficult to decide what to do with them. These stylish hairstyles are incredibly easy to do and look hot.

The Streaker

For this look select two bright hair extensions that contrast strongly with your hair color. The two can be the same color or two different coordinating colors. Red and pink look good together as does purple and black, green and blue, and yellow and white or platinum blonde.

Part your hair about an inch or so from your regular part and clip in a hair extension about a half an inch from your hairline. Repeat on the opposite side of your part. Comb your fingers through your hair to blend the bright hair extensions with your own hair. You can now style your hair as you normally would, keeping in mind the instructions for your individual hair extensions (e.g. synthetic hair generally can't be heat styled).

Colorful Ponytail

You can use as many hair extensions in this as you want. The more you use the more noticeable the color will be in your ponytail. One will result in a subtle color accent, while three would cause a big burst of color. Try multiple different colors for a rainbow look.

Part your hair slightly off center. Clip in your hair extensions along the part starting towards the front and working your way backwards. Part your hair somewhere else and run your fingers through your hair to blend in the hair extensions. Pull your hair into a regular ponytail or a variation of your choice.

A Layer of Color

You'll need enough hair extensions to stretch across the back of your head from ear to ear. This depends greatly on the width of your hair extensions and the size of your head. If you don't have enough to stretch across the length of your head butting up next to each other, you can try spacing them out evenly.

Part your hair horizontally halfway down the back of your head. Clip the upper half of your hair out of the way. Starting with just behind one of your ears, clip in hair extensions along the entire part until you come to the other ear. Release the rest of your hair and gently comb your fingers through your hair to blend in the extensions.

Helpful tip: if you have medium or short hair and your clip-in hair extensions are too long, you can cut them down to the proper length for your hair. It's better to err on the side of cutting it shorter rather than longer than your own hair as this will help it blend in better. If the hair extension was layered, then you should try to maintain the layers by cutting each layer individually.

I love hair extensions! I've tried alot of different ones some from hot topics, clairs, Snazzy Lites and Sally's. But I like Snazzy Lites the best because they are real hair and you can change the styles. Plus they have lots of colors to choose from. The ones I bought from the other places were synthetic so they didn't last long.

I tried this for my Halloween costume. It turned out perfect. I was searching for the best way to put them in so that they would not fall out while I was partying all night. I found this site which was pretty self explanatory http://www.snazzylites.com/tutorial.htm it provided a great tutorial on how to attach them. I like the clip-in hair color so much I've been wearing them out on the weekends they are so much fun. Now all of my friends want to buy them.

I love changing my hair. But it is so fried at this point from all the bleach I've been using on it all these years. I've been thinking about getting clip-in extensions. Do they work on short hair?

I really like the streaker idea. I've thought about Turqoise and Blue clip-in extensions or Fushia and White. I've searched all over the web but it seems like it is really hard to find Turqoise or white human hair. Anyone know where I can get these?

I have been wearing hair extensions for a really long time. I usually only get natural colors. I am cetainly intereted in trying something new. Colorful clip in hair extensions sounds like a lot of fun. I would like the try some where I can make the entire back of my hair look like it has been colored hot pink. Any idea where I can get this?

Thanks for the article. I just order some of these colorful clip-ins from www.snazzylites.com. I'm really happy with the colors and the hair quality. I love changing my hair color but I don't like sacrificing the health of my hair. They are great to have for accessorizing my wardrobe and I feel so fashionable when I wear them. I have a few different colors and most people think that I've colored my hair. I love it!
