Fun Ways to Reuse Graduation Robes

And Some Silly Ways, Too

Let's face it. Most of us, after high school and college graduation end up with a funny looking cap and gown that we're never going to do anything with. Here are some ideas for keeping yours from hanging in your closet for the next five years.

Give it to someone in need. There are lots of people who really can't afford to buy their own cap and gown. Ask your school if they keep a collection of them, or maybe a local charity. At worst, thrift stores will take donations and sell them at low prices. This is by far the most useful thing you could possible do with that funny looking robe and hat.

Donate it to a theater. Sometimes theaters need things like this for costumes in plays. They'll find some way to use it. Better yet, grab a video camera and make a graduation parody with your friends.

Halloween costume. Especially effective if you have younger siblings. Then *they* have to figure out how to get rid of it! That... or put it on, get a batman mask... and go trick-or-treating yourself! Sure, you're probably a little old for it, but you should never get old enough to not have any fun.

A curtain. Especially if you're graduating high school, and going to college, you are probably going to become nocturnal. Use the robe as an extra layer to block out the blinding rays of the sun! (I'm only half kidding.)

If you sew, and you want the robe as a memento, then you could make a quilt using pieces of it, or some other interesting project perhaps. Use it as a bathrobe, if you wear one.

Did you hate school? Well, then, have a graduation party with a small, controlled fire.. and burn the robe. Please be careful with this though.

Regardless of what you do with the robe after graduating - and I suggest you wait until then to do any of the things i suggested - congratulations on your success. The cap and gown might look foolish, but they're a symbol of a turning point in your life, and opportunity. Good luck to you in the future.

The donation to a theater is so smart! I'm tempted to see if my son can wear his brother's next year. I don't know if the school will recycle or not. If not, I'm thinking dorm room pillow. :) Great ideas Jenny.
