Fun Ways to Train Your Puppy

Now that you have decided the time is right for your family to have an adorable puppy that you will love and cherish you also need to decide the right methods to train your puppy against many annoying habits. Puppy training can be very frustrating but also very rewarding at the same time. The one thing you always want to remember is to stay calm and have patience with your puppy. You have to remember your puppy is still a baby and we all know if you are a parent how much patience you need to handle a baby. Just think of your new puppy as if he is your new baby.

The best time to start training your puppy is the age of eight weeks. At this age your puppy will be separated from the other pups in the litter and can start learning the basic living skills. You want to teach your puppy first about in house training if he will be an indoor dog most of the time. So let's start with the most popular house training for your puppy which would be the potty training. You need to remember you will have to have a lot of patience during this process. You can put a diaper on a baby to prevent accidents but no matter how much we wish we could do that with our puppies we know we can't. You first want to train your puppy to one spot in the house that he is comfortable with. Put puppy pads or newspapers in that spot. When your puppy has his first accident pick your puppy up and gently put his nose close to where he had his accident and say no. Take your puppy to the spot you have his puppy pads or newspapers and leave him in that area for a few minutes. When you do this each time he has an accident he will soon know the correct place to do his business. If your puppy is going to be a larger dog that will be outside a lot instead of training him to puppy pads inside you would want to train him to the outside. If you have a fenced in area just take him out in the fenced in area every time he has an accident. You may want to have him a doggie treat when he does good. If you don't have a fenced in area take him out on an extended leash. This will give him enough length to walk around the yard and go to a place in the yard he feels comfortable in.

Now that you have trained your puppy in that area you now can start the basic training such as sit, heal, and lay down. You want to teach him one step at a time. Do not try and teach him all three things together. Your puppy will get confused. When you want to teach your puppy to sit gently push his bottom down and say the command sit. When he does this give him a lot of praise or a treat. When you want him to heal keep his leash close to you and not loose. It would be best not to have a long leash at this time of training. Take a few steps and when you want him to stop pull his leash gently back and say heal. Make sure you say each command in a stern voice but not mean. Once again with any training reward your puppy with praise. When you want him to lay down just point down on the ground and get on your knees and say down. Always remember to be consistent and have patience when you are training your puppy. The results will be very rewarding for not only your puppy but also for you and your family.
