Fun Writing Activities for Kids to Do at Home

Writing Activities for Kids Should Be Meaningful and Have Purpose

Michelle M. Guilbeau
Getting kids to want to write in the classroom can be a challenge but getting children to want to write at home can be comparable to winning the lottery, it is possible but the odds are slim.

However, the good news is kids enjoy fun activities and there are fun writing activities for children to do at home. Writing does not have to be a chore for kids, by offering writing activities at home that are meaningful and exciting, children will not even be aware they are exploring literacy, but will instead just think that writing is so much fun!

Writing Activity for Home: Grocery List

Keep it real for kids, kids want to know they are writing for a purpose and what better way to keep the writing real than by having your child write down items on your grocery list. Keep a magnetic list on the refrigerator and every time you think of something that is needed at the grocery store, have your child write it down. To extend this fun writing activity even further, as you and your child shop in the grocery store and pick up those items written down on your grocery list, have your child cross the items off the list, this is a great visual and written language connection.

Writing Activity for Home: Photograph Journal

Writing activities for kids to do at home does not have to be fancy or cost a lot of money and this is evident by a photograph journal. When you pick up photographs from the store, you will invariably have photos that you do not want to put in the family photo album either because the shot is off center or perhaps the persons in the photograph do appear to have the most flattering pose. Regardless of the reason, your child would be thrilled to have those photos and the child can tape or glue the photographs on lined paper, your child can write a caption below the photograph and staple a group of the lined paper together to make a photographic journal.

Writing Activity for Home: Daily Agenda

Keeping track of the family activities and individual schedules can be daunting but I found that by keeping a small chalk board hanging on the kitchen wall is a great way to list what is going on for the day in terms of the family's activities and what each person's schedule is. Writing down the daily agenda is an excellent writing activity for kids to do, not only is it a fun writing activity but it is also a great way for the child to reinforce in his/her mind what everyone is doing during the day including him/herself.

The most important and general aspect of keeping writing activities for kids fun at home is to offer writing opportunities to children that are meaningful and are of importance. Would you want to put effort into your writing if you knew that it would be looked at for a few minutes and then tossed aside? I would guess that your answer would be no.

We as adults write for a purpose, whether it is for leisure or business, kids also want to have that sense of purpose for their writing activities. Be sure to offer writing activities for your child that are purposeful and meaningful, by taking these simple suggestions you will find that your child will enjoy and look forward to writing and you will feel like you have won the lottery!

Excellent ideas. The way I've seen some kids' and teens' handwriting and reading abilities lately, it's scary. They've just been passed thru the system.
