Funniest Halloween Memory- the Choking Witch

Susan Lundeen
My funniest Halloween began as a gift of love. My mother made me a wonderful witch's costume. She had used dye to make an old sheet black. She transformed this sheet into a witch's dress, cape and black hat. On the night of Halloween when I was seven I transformed myself into this spooky witch. Just as I was leaving the house with my brother, who was ten, did I discover my costume had a problem.

The cape was just long enough so that someone standing behind me could accidentally step on the bottom of my cape with out me knowing, as soon as I moved forward I was stopped short choked by my cape. My father put my brother in charge of making sure my cape did not get stepped on all night. The game plan was to have my brother walk behind me as we walked up to the houses to trick or treat with our neighborhood friends. The idea was sound in theory, and worked early in the evening.

As soon as the streets got crowded parents were stepping on my cape. Choke! I kept running to catch up to my group. As we turned to walk away from a house, a new group of kids would step on my cape. Choke! I was stuck in place until those children were ready to leave that house. Eventually, no matter how I held my cape, someone stepped on it and choke!

The cape was getting shredded at the bottom and I was getting a red line on my neck in true Halloween fashion. It may not seem funny, but out a group of ten children, no one suggested taking off the cape because it would ruin the witch costume. For two hours of trick or treating every five minutes included a Choke! Wait for me!

Happy Halloween!
