Funniest Toddler Quote: First Watermelon Party

Debbie Dunn
Years ago, my family and I attended a Watermelon Party held at the home of Mrs. Worley, a woman from our church. My younger brother named David, not yet four, was very excited as he had never eaten a watermelon before.

He had seen pictures of watermelon in some of his toddler books. He had heard people talk about eating watermelon. He listened excitedly as we talked about eating watermelon at past parties. He even announced to some of his friends that he was going to a watermelon party.

Mrs. Worley was David's Sunday School teacher. She asked, "David, would you like to come into the kitchen with me to watch me cut the watermelon?"

David said, "Yeah! I would!"

My mother felt she better join him to make certain he didn't get too close to the knife. My mother said, "I'll come along. Now, David, remember to not get too close to the knife."

David said, "I won't, Mommy!"

David, my mother, and Mrs. Worley walked into the kitchen while the rest of us gathered in the living room to chat and wait.

David watched excitedly as Mrs. Worley made the first cut into the huge watermelon. He was still excited as she made the second cut. When she started laying large pieces of watermelon on the plates, his smile disappeared. He looked puzzled and then a bit distressed.

He looked over at his mother and stated in a loud booming voice that carried into the living room, "Mommy, I want a piece with no raisins in it."
