Funny Halloween Personal Stories: Touched by a Ghost!

Why Nobody Ate at My Grandma's Dining Room

Marie Puddu
A lot of people take advantage of family gatherings to tell funny Halloween personal stories. Generally, I think it's kids' stuff -- sitting around the fireplace in the middle of the night, exchanging made-up ghost stories, and wearing freaky costumes. Costumes I'd wear, but with stories I prefer to sit down and listen to what crazy tales other members of the family had to tell. This has always been the trend until one day -- when I had to tell a ghost story of my own.

Incidentally, it was one rainy day when my grandma and aunt decided to go to a wake of a far relative. He was supposed to be my uncle, but I have never seen or met him. He lived with his family in the country. It was a day trip that took forever; we arrived by midnight at my uncle's home. My grandma's sister lived in the house across the street. That was where we all agreed to stay the night. It was a quiet house with lots of room for everybody. It had a dining room with a huge mirror that covered the entire south wall. It looked a little deserted. All the furniture were moved to one corner as if nobody ate there anymore.

After saying our regards to the family of the deceased, we walked to the house where we would spend the night. There was one bedroom reserved for my grandma, my aunt, and myself. My other relatives were staying in other rooms. Aunt Amy came up to me and asked me to walk with her through the dining room to get to the bathroom. At first I joked that she was too old to be spooked. She just kept quiet and had me wait outside the bathroom. I observed how dead the dining room looked from where I was standing.

I brushed my teeth and checked myself out in the huge dining room mirror. It was fading in the corners. I made faces at it. My aunt told me to hurry and go to bed. I thought that mirror was pretty spooky but so what? I didn't believe in ghosts. If there were ghosts, I don't know if I'd be scared either. I kept on making faces, hoping the ghosts would get disgusted and fly away.

You thought you heard the funny stories for Halloween yet? Brace yourself. I woke up at exactly three in the morning and, with eyes squinting, walked across the quiet, seedy dining room to get to the bathroom. I opened the door. Never have I seen a bathroom so small! Wow I remember saying to myself "this has got to be the smallest bathroom in the world!" There was barely enough room to move. There was a small, old mirror by the wall next to the toilet bowl. Even though I was so sleepy I checked myself out again and made faces. When I was done, I turned off the light. The entire dining room I had to cross was dark except for a small light bulb on the corner. I was facing the wall mirror. I was walking towards it, undaunted. My eyes could barely see my reflection. Slowly, the hair on the back of my neck started to rise. Behind me it felt so warm, like something (or somebody) from above my head was coming down. My skin felt so hot on my shoulders. I could hear a whispery voice coming closer and closer from behind...It was trying to grab me!

My adrenaline shot up and I screamed at the top of my lungs. I ran at breakneck speed back to the bedroom and stepped on a puddle of water. I fell like a rag doll on the floor, still screaming. I woke up the entire neighborhood.

My relatives, bless their heart, didn't scold me and told me instead that the dining room was really haunted. No wonder nobody ate there anymore! My aunt knew the secret, but didn't let it out, for fear I won't be able to fall asleep. Now I don't really believe in ghosts. Even though I felt its presence, I haven't seen it, thank heavens. I don't know if my funny Halloween personal stories will change my point of view about spirits. I do know even the non-believers among you can encounter them -- just make sure you have a heart strong enough to stay calm. I'm now proud to say that my story was passed on by my relatives and was told every Halloween!
