Funny Halloween Picture Books for Kids

Laugh Out Loud with These Halloween Children's Books

Susan Ott
Halloween can be a very scary holiday for young children. When the main characters are ghosts, goblins, and witches, it can be a less-than-friendly time of year. There are lots of Halloween children's books out there, but many are serious or scary, which may not be appealing to smaller children. Fortunately, these funny Halloween books capture the most fun aspects of the holiday in stories that will make kids laugh instead of be frightened. These Halloween books for kids use humor and fun illustrations to get kids in the mood for all of the fun that Halloween can bring, and none of the fear.

SpongeBob SpookyPants
SpongeBob is always funny, and in this board book he and Patrick will have your kids laughing until the end. Patrick can't decide what to wear for Halloween, so SpongeBob dresses up in all sorts of crazy costumes to help Patrick decide. And in the end, you'll laugh at what Patrick finally chooses. Even though this funny Halloween book is a board book, kids of all ages will enjoy this story.

Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody
Children who grew up on the classic Goodnight Moon will instantly recognize this humorous parody written just for Halloween. Instead of a furry bunny, a hairy werewolf child gets ready for bed by saying Goodnight to all of the ghoulish creatures around his room such as ". . . two hairy claws / And a set of jaws / And a loud screechy bat / And a black hat." The characters are silly, and kids will laugh as their favorite bedtime story is high jacked for Halloween while they say Goodnight to monsters everywhere.

Runaway Mummy: A Petrifying Parody
Author Michael Rex is at it again with his second hilarious parody book for Halloween. In this funny Halloween book, based on the classic Runaway Bunny, a Mummy tells her son that she will be there with him, no matter what he turns into. That is, until, he threatens to become a little boy with suburban parents who drive him around in a minivan to soccer games. This seems to be the one thing his Mummy just can't take, and this plot twist will have your kids laughing out loud at the thought that their lives will scare a Mummy monster.

There Was An Old Monster
Based upon the popular "There Was An Old Lady . . ." books, this parody of sorts is a funny Halloween book for kids with colorful illustrations that will have them laughing and guessing until the plot twist at the end. Follow this zany monster as he swallows all sorts of creatures that make him dance in his pants. You can even download the song so that you can sing instead of read this engaging Halloween Children's book.

Skeleton Hiccups
Hiccups are a humorous problem, but even more so when a skeleton is rattling around with them all day. Follow this silly skeleton as he tries every trick in the book to get rid of his hiccups, only to find that nothing's working. Sugar and water just go through his frame, and everything he touches gets thrown around from his hiccup-y shaking. But his friend ghost has the answer in a humorous conclusion that will send those hiccups "hic-hic-hic"-ing away.
