Funny Spooky Stories

Roni ODonnell
Halloween has always been a big part of my life. Especially since it is my birthday. Growing up I did not appreciate it so much but now as a grandma, I am really cool to the grandchildren. Don't know why but I am. I also get some eery looking home made birthday cards.

You know the ages between four and eight. Nothing like the Grim Reaper or a bloody monster to wish you a Happy Birthday. Then there are those hanging spiders and skeleton plus the ones I really have to make a big deal out of. I then sit and have them explain just exactly what is it. I can usually tell though if it is Frankenstein or of course, the common dinosaur.

Yes, I get the most creative, comical and spooky cards there are and i would not change it for anything.

The one year they took me out to dinner and when they arrived the two grandsons had poster sized cards folded in half. They were so excited to give them to me in the restaurant. What can I say. They were great but the smiles on their faces were even better when they handed them to me proudly. Glad I don't care that people know my age.

When my children were younger we didn't have much money so at Halloween we became very creative. My son never had problems with whatever he decided to be. My daughter on the other hand took some work and good ideas.

The one year she was a kitty cat. She wore black leotards and a body suit. I took a black hand band and put the cutest ears on. She wore her hair in a ponytail and then I painted her face like a tiger cat with whiskers. For the tail I took a wire coat hanger and stretched it out. Then I put it into a black nylon stocking and connected one end to a black belt she had worn. She was so cute and proud bouncing around with that tail wagging everywhere.

The next year she was a butterfly with poster board wings cut out. We took markers and glitter and designed them beautifully. The same as the cat outfit except then we took wire with two little foam balls and connected them to a headband. That made her antennas.

We had so much fun just making up these costumes. Today you can buy a lot of that stuff already made. We had many fun Halloweens though.

I have to say one of the funniest was when I was little. We lived in Louisiana on an Air Force base. I was probably about nine, my sister eight and my brother was six. I don't even remember what my sister and I had worn but they had decided to dress my brother up as a little princess. That alone was comical to me.

On the base they had deep wide ditches for the fast downpours of rain we would get every now and then. The ditch would fill quickly but empty just as fast. They rarely had water in them.

Anyway, about half way through trick or treating I noticed my brother missing from the large group. I kept asking where he was but all anyone would say was that my mother had taken him home. He was OK. We finished going door to door and later returned home.

Anxious to find out what happened to my brother I asked my mom as soon as we had gotten home. She said he had fun down through one of the ditches and tore his skirt off. I about died laughing. He was not hurt but half dressed so my mother took him home.

Of all the Halloweens I think that will be one of the best to me. One that i will always remember. Happy Halloween!
