Furnishing a House on a Budget

Style and Substance in Your Decor Without Breaking the Bank

Furnishing a house on a budget can be challenging. But with a little creativity and research, you can create a space with style for very little cash. There are many discount furniture stores these days, such as IKEA, where you can locate inexpensive furniture for your home, but these stores tend to lean toward a very modern, stark look. So if you're looking to create a more classic, substantial style on a budget, the most important things you need to be prepared to do are research and re-invent.

Furniture for free? It's not a dream; it's everywhere. It just requires a little searching. Check craigslist, your local newspaper classifieds, or even the community boards at your grocery store or library. There are always lots of people looking to get rid of furniture that will offer it for free to someone willing to come and pick it up. Granted, such furniture is rarely in mint-condition, but with a little elbow grease, you can re-invent an old, tired piece into a stylish treasure. Stain applied to an old headboard can offer it a brand-new life. Sanding down a coffee table and painting it a complimentary color to your room creates a custom appeal. If you're brave and into funky shabby-chic style, you can decoupage an end table or bookcase in old photos, classic postcards, or even personal photos! Simply, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Flea markets are another great place to find used furniture at amazing prices. Search the web for markets in your area and find one to visit. Remember to bring cash and your cleverest bargaining techniques. Remember that it's okay to haggle at a flea market! The sellers often anticipate it and compensate by marking their goods at higher prices than they are actually willing to accept. Once again, it is very important to see potential where others would see none. You may not be able to find the exact shade of upholstery or stain you're looking for, but at flea-market haggle prices, you can afford to have your furniture re-done - or save even more by doing it yourself.

Auctions have no set prices at all! Demand sets the price at an auction event. Check the internet and find an upcoming auction in your area. It's advisable to attend at least one auction without bidding on anything just to get an idea of how they work. It's easy to get caught up in the fast-paced bidding market and end up paying far more than you'd intended. Do your research, and keep your self-control close to the surface and you can find some great deals at auctions.

Find your furniture used and cheap and breathe new life into it. You don't have to spend a fortune, just some time and energy and you can have the stylish decoration you want at a price you can actually afford!
