Furries: Hot New Subculture

Yiff
As far as anyone can tell furries started with Saturday morning cartoons. we all remember Mickey, Bugs, Daffy and many other characters that almost everyone in the U.S. grew up with. It was the tradition to wake up early enough on Saturday and run to the TV and the let the animated mayhem capture are imaginations. Now many of you are probably wondering, "What is a furry?". well a furry is a person that is a member of one of the most unique subcultures that i have ever known, a subculture where people fantasize about being those crazy cartoon critters the once saw on television. Some dress in costumes that are adorable, soft, and funny, much like a mascot for your local high school. Some of those costumes can even be so real that were you to happen upon them in an unsuspecting place you may even get a bit of a fright.

Another prominent aspect of the furry fandom is artwork, almost anything you can think of. It can be cartoonish and funny, it can be dark and depressing, it can be of creatures in a universe so beautifully bizarre that you cant help but wonder what sort of mind could come up with thing. The artwork is what binds the fandom together it gives all who gaze upon it a window to their inner furry. Its not all pretty pictures of digitrade animal people frolicking and enjoying life, it's even creative writing. Wonderfully written stories that can be so terrifying that you quite literally can't sleep at night, or stories about love and superheroes or even the ways in which seemingly normal humans explore their furry sides. All of this can readily be found at web sites such as http://www.furnation.com or http://www.furaffinity.net places hundreds of furries maybe even thousands offer to show you the world neigh the universe of furries.
In my research on this fascinating group of people i learned the process of becoming a furry and emmersed myself into their culture. It all starts out with finding your totem animal, an animal that you personally feel a connection with. Mine was the Canis Lupis (Timber Wolf). Although the most common of furries they are very special to me as i have always viewed my guiding spirit as a wolf. When selecting your animal there are no rules, you can choose a beast of myth (dragons, unicorns, etc), it can be something genetically impossible if you really want. I have seen furries who's characters were crosses of wolves and tigers, bears and foxes, even dragons and horses, it doesn't matter what you choose as long as its special to you.

The next step is to give personality and description to your newly found furry self. Most usually use their own personality however most will also design their characters to be what they wish they were instead of what they are like in real life. For instance in real life I'm 23 and have the body of you standard computer/gamer geek, my furry self is 25, a towering slab of muscle who is smart, courageous, and kind. You can even go as far as to start designing the world you live in, the only limit is where ever you decided to stop yourself.

The last step is interact. A famous saying comes to mind "when in Rome do as the Romans do". This culture for the most part lives on the internet, surf to some sites, chat with other furries, role play, comment on art you like, maybe go to a furry convention such as Anthrocon or Furtherconfusion. Which is like a giant party and flea market where you can dance and purchase or sell artwork. You could even find a sweet heart to cuddle up with. It may sound a little odd but i thoroughly enjoyed myself while studying these people and all their ways. I would recommend it any and all want to know what its like to walk on the wild side.
